IMPRESSIVE~ Better than expected! WELL done~
PLOT: HISTORIC fact re inacted with excellent actors and details and fantastic cinema reproduction~ exellent over all~ does not drag~ This is more than a drop the bomb movie. WE see the events leading UP to the making and dropping of the A BOMBS on Japan. ALSO some real life Japanese, Americans say what occured because THEY were there added between scenes that makes this a very good movie~ OUTSTANDING IS KEN WELSH as Truman who nails the looks and voice of a President who made the fateful decision. Truman takes over on the death of FDR and IS FILLED IN ON THE ULTRA SECRET Atom bombs that could be used to END the war. the moral decisions are dicussed and politics and historic events are reinacted on both sides that show the final few days before the bombs are dropped and why. also ADDED ... Hiroshima -- a grim tale, well told
Saw this on TV, which motivated me to buy it. A fascinated drama, spliced with interviews of survivors, on the bombing of Hiroshima. It includes the internal Japanese power struggles between hawks and doves that, as much as anything, forced the Americans to use the atomic weapons. Timothy West is good reading the phone book, but the rest of the cast are no slouches, either. I found this film superior to Paul Newman's "Fat Man and Little Boy," which was loaded down with ahistorical events and issues, heavy-handed allegories, and its 1980s nuclear-freeze message, even though Newman is also good reading the phone book. After watching this movie several times, I bought my own copy. Amazing.
The history of World War II has always captured my interest. This movie, among dozens of docudramas and documentary works, stands above the field. The manner in which historical footage is interwoven with the film production is done exceptionally well. Kenneth Welsh delivers a remarkable performance as Harry Truman, who woke up on day and found himself filling the shoes of FDR. This movie, on any level, is worth watching. I rented it twice from Netflix, then decided to buy my own copy. The people who put this movie together know their craft. Research done to provide historic accuracy is first rate.
