Product Information

GREEN DRAGON takes place during the close of the Vietnam War, at Camp Pendleton, a US military base in California that was a temporary home to thousands of South Vietnamese refugees. Patrick Swayze plays the concerned commander who befriends English-speaking refugee Tai Tran (Don Duong) and hires him as camp manager. His little nephew Minh (Trung Nguyen) and niece Anh (Jennifer Tran) are anxiously awaiting the arrival of their mother, who was left behind during the evacuation. Fortunately, Minh finds a friend in the camp cook (Forest Whitaker), and together they paint a colorful mural on the kitchen wall. Meanwhile, another refugee, Duc (Billinjer Tran), tries hard to embrace the American way of life, but finds heartbreak when he discovers his lost love (Kathleen Luong) is also at the camp, now the second wife of another man. Time passes and everyone listens to the fall of Saigon over the radio while waiting to be assimilated, like it or not, into their strange new homeland. Directed by Timothy Linh Bui, this is a stately, mournful series of vignettes that brings healing attention to an aspect of the Vietnam War some may have forgotten.

he Green Dragon is not particularly a story of the Vietnam war but of the refugees of every war: Their fear for themselves, their missing family members and friends, and their fear of the unknown culture they are being thrust into. Their hopes and their dreams, also. The story itself is about the easy interaction between the little boy who is looking for his lost mother and the black American cook, and the uneasy interaction between the adults of both nations. The Vietnamese characters are very real in their humanity - good, bad, young, old. The film introduces certain aspects of Vietnamese culture (polygamy - filial devotion) that few Americans are acquainted with. It should be noted that the main Vietnamese actor, Don Duong, upon his return to Vietnam was put under house arrest for 6 ... he Green Dragon is not particularly a story of the Vietnam war but of the refugees of every war: Their fear for themselves, their missing family members and friends, and their fear of the unknown culture they are being thrust into. love love love this movie!!
I'm usually against reading movies...not because I hate reading or am illiterate I just prefer to sit back and be entertained. However, I couldn't wait to keep reading the subtitles for this movie. I was born way after the Vietnam war but do have veterans in my family (including my stepdad of 9 years) and its nice to see a movie about the war based on how the refugees in America lived vs just seeing war. The on screen relationship between Forrest and the young boy (sorry can't remeber the name) is quite touching. I bought the movie as a Patrick Swayze lover who collects as may of his works as possible, but after watching I fell in cinema love.I'm usually against reading movies...not because I hate reading or am illiterate I just prefer to sit back and be entertained.
