Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1a
Overall function of phone and features are very good. Takes some getting used to and how things work. Weight and feel in hand is good. Toggle switch to help move around on screen is a plus. Screen size could be bigger and using buttons has different functions on different pages can be confusing. Sync's up very well with any computer and automatically pulls out contacts including e-mails which is a big plus. Keyboard is a good feature and stylus has slot on phone. Also the ability to upgrade memory and remove memory card to upload and download from computer is a great feature. Battery life is not great but with normal use including internet usage the charge will last a day but I've been charging each night and purchased another battery just in case this one stops holding a charge. Nice phone thats getting out dated.
Phone is great, but it gets really hot while charging, I think this may lead to electrical problems with the phone. I gotta say the camera sucks. I had a Sony K790 with the same 3.1MPX on it and it would take beautiful pictures. Sony has made a great keyboard for small fingers. In the photos it looks like it would be good for larger hands but my blackberry 8900 had a better keypad. The stylus location and ease of use with it is nice. The top of the stylus does however have a tendency to press hard into my hand causing it to hurt later on in the day. Touch screen is beautiful, and works well but the light does flicker around the edges. Brilliant style and features. Horrible windows mobile!
Like many tech fanatics, I eagerly looked forward to the release of this phone over a year ago when it was first announced. But after all that wait, I must say that I am a little disappointed with the final product. Sony definitely delivered a great looking and solidly built cellphone. However, the choice of using Windows Mobile on the Xperia X1 is the real failure of this phone. If you have used the iPhone (OS X) or the HTC G1 (Android) and then you used a Windows Mobile phone such as the Xperia X1, you will be blown away by how poor an operating system Windows Mobile is. It is slow, buggy (even after its been out for ages), prone to crashes and restarts and not designed for finger touch. The panel interface does little to mask the ugliness and user unfriendliness of Windows Mobile. ... With the exception of the sbp panel and the Sony designed media player panel, most of the other panels that are available at this writing are nothing to write home about. At the end of the day, the panels are just eye candy and are not enough to improve the user experience significantly. That said, the phone is well appointed with GPS, a beautiful screen (800x480) resolution, nice keyboard, FM radio and a very handsome design. The screen clarity will impress you. I was able to watch a Divx encoded movie on the Xperia X1 and I was thoroughly impress with its clarity. In my opinion, this phone would be better served if it ran Android (Google OS) instead of the crappy windows mobile operating system. Pros: 1. Great design. 2. Very stylish and will grab positive attention. 3. Excellent screen. High resolution (800x480) Crystal clear, excellent for movies. 4. GPS, WIFI (802.11b/g), bluetooth. 5. Very good battery life. Cons: (all the negatives are due to windows mobile) 1. Sometimes slow and buggy. 2. Archaic user interface. 3. Poor finger touch implementation (forces you to use stylus).

Heavy enough to not just scratch out a living as a one-hit-wonder but aim for the WinMo top. The extra solid metal looks, gorgeous screen and the right pinch of novelty called XPERIA panels look to us as good enough reasons for the X1 to be hyped and romanticized. By the way, romance or not, Sony Ericsson and HTC have hit their perfect shape with that one. Key features: * Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support plus HSDPA 7.2Mbps * 3-inch 65K-color WVGA touchscreen * Qualcomm MSM7200 528 Mhz CPU and 256 MB DDR SDRAM * 3.15 MP auto focus camera with VGA video recording * Four-row full QWERTY slide-out keyboard * Wi-Fi and built-in GPS receiver with A-GPS * X-Panels interface * ... But hey, is it not the most elaborate and charismatic PocketPC too? As to skills, the high-res 3" screen and the full QWERTY keyboard seem the most important parts of its magnificent ammo though its processing power is not to be neglected either. As you probably guessed by yourselves the main alternative to the XPERIA X1 is HTC Touch Pro. It has a smaller screen than the XPERIA X1 and features a slightly lower resolution. In addition it is heavier and, if we were to be asked, not nearly as hot as the XPERIA. However, the QWERTY keyboard of the Touch Pro is well ahead of what the X1 has to offer. The Touch Pro accelerometer and active magnetic stylus are small but nice touches that add to its allure. Since the QWERTY keyboard is one of the key selling point and the Touch Pro has such great advantage there the choice between the two is really hard. Still the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 is a really good device, the purchase of which you are unlikely to regret. It is unable to solve all the usability issues of the underlying Windows OS but if modding and tweaking is your thing, you can achieve quite good results. And the thumb-optimized X-Panels are quite a treat adding the essential fun element to the XPERIA user experience. We wouldn't by any means strongly recommend the X1 to non-Windows fans but they might still check it out.

Let's provide some context: The Xperia X1 is Sony Ericsson's first Windows Mobile smart phone and is the leading model in an "Xperia" family that will grow overtime. Among its numerous qualities, two set it apart from the Windows Mobile crowd: metal construction and panel-based interface. As smart as a phone might be, it needs to perform basic phone tasks well, simply because the killer app for phones is... voice. The Xperia X1 virtual dial pad works very well. If you wonder, sliding the keyboard in and out does not terminate a conversation, so it's OK to use it during a call. Overall, the dialing function work very well. That might sound like a "duh", but Windows Mobile phones aren't all created equal in that respect. The physical design of the Xperia X1 is top notch. The aluminum body look and feels good, just like nearly everything that the eye can see. Metal is everywhere, even the QWERTY keys have a metallic feel, although I can't say for sure if they are made of aluminum or not. The keyboard sliding mechanism feels very solid and the slight upwards tilt of the display is a very nice touch that improves usability a little (as compared with the HTC Touch Pro). I personally think that there's a bit too much branding on the front (the "Sony Ericsson" name and the "Xperia" logo). At the bottom, there's a "mouse" that is comparable to the optical mouse in the Samsung OMNIA. It can be very useful in situations where you have to scroll up and down or go down a list - mainly because the drag and scroll doesn't work very well in Windows Mobile. A Blackberry-type trackball would be a much better alternative. The downside of this design is that it is a little thick and heavy - you can definitely feel it in the pocket. For comparison: Blackberry Curve (111g), iPhone (135g), Xperia (145g). I guess that it's the price to pay for a nice metallic design. The 800x480 touch display is wonderful and it is certainly the focus point of the phone. We also noticed that it was easier to hit the corner buttons (start, close) on this one compared on other phones (HTC Touch Pro, Samsung OMNIA). It is actually the first one that doesn't annoy us to death when trying to click the "close" button on the upper-right. Now, the real issue is Windows Mobile 6.1 itself and the fact that it is not designed for a touch-only use. Fortunately, there's a keyboard and the optical mouse. The Windows Mobile 6 Main Menu is roomy and has plenty of screen real estate to show emails, appointments. When you want to launch an application, you will have to click once to get to the panel and once again to launch the app. It takes about 2 seconds to launch any applications present in the panel's first screen. From the panel The virtual keyboard is cute, but it is way too small to be used with fingers. But I think that Sony Ericsson could have done much better in this instance. Yes, there is a physical keyboard, but still, sometimes, it's nice to not have to slide it out to type “Yup!” or when using the phone with only one hand.
