Great game and a huge breath of fresh air for the franchise.
Mortal Kombat has been a series that is most notable for its gore and hilarious use of overly-violent fighting. It had a humble beginning as a series that eventually exploded in popularity with Mortal Kombat 2 and Mortal Kombat 3. After that, the series began to taper off, and the quality began to falter greatly with the jump to 3D. So much so that the series was eventually sold off. Naturally, I was a little skeptical of this release of Mortal Kombat, as the previous installments have been less than stellar. I was able to get the game used for cheaper than expected, so I took a chance and honestly? It was well worth it. The game returns to its roots. Even though it's a 3D game, it plays like a classic 2D fighter. And the developers focused more on quality than quantity, which ... Mortal Kombat has been a series that is most notable for its gore and hilarious use of overly-violent fighting. Naturally, I was a little skeptical of this release of Mortal Kombat, as the previous installments have been less than stellar. I was able to get the game used for cheaper than expected, so I took a chance and honestly? It was well worth it. The game returns to its roots. Even though it's a 3D game, it plays like a classic 2D fighter. And the developers focused more on quality than quantity, which was a huge plaguing issue for Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. Each character has distinct fighting styles, moves, and characteristics. However, as everyone still has overall the same basic moveset (down + punch = uppercut; back + kick = sweep; etc.), the characters themselves are all relatively similar. Though this is also positive considering that it's easily approachable by newcomers. The game itself plays very smoothly, even though the game does seem to cheat at times (seriously- the AI seems a little too good at times and Shao Kahn (the final boss) does a tremendous amount of damage in a very little amount of time). Additional modes are welcomed, such as tag-team co-op to play online and through the arcade mode. Old favorites such as Test Your Might return as well. There's also a very detailed story mode, but it can be a bit awkward at times, and even at the end you may be left scratching your head, especially since it hints heavily at another installment of Mortal Kombat coming soon. After you finish the story, you'll understand what I mean when I say that it's a little confusing to continue the series considering. With that in mind, the game itself still feels relatively sparse. You can collect koins and such currency to use in the Krypt which has returned. However, unless you care a lot about the game's music and art, there's not much to be found in exchange for coins. If you don't care about collecting the art and music, you'll likely end up like me and end up with a stockpile of koins with nothing to spend them on. There are also only two characters that you can unlock in the game: Quan Chi and Cyber Sub Zero. The boss characters are locked throughout the game, which is kind of disappointing, but also very understandable as they could easily break the game. And finally, there is a noticeable gap between character tiers. Some characters really are just better than others. If you don't believe me, you can consult Bradygames' guide and see the tiers. Some characters are difficult to deal with because of their special moves, and in the AI's hands, some characters use the special moves to disturbing efficiency. Though this idea isn't anything new, as even popular games like Marvel VS Capcom 2 have notable tiers, it can kind of take away from the game when the difficulty suddenly spikes. The bottom line though comes to whether or not the game is fun, and it is. I'm not sure I would recommend it at full price, but the game is very enjoyable for a fighting game. Compared to the previous installments, it's a fun breath of fresh air with fun modes, but not a lot of substance.

It is still a great video game if you don't mind the carnage!
The 2011 version of Mortal Combat is certainly an advancement in martial arts video games. Great graphics,fantastic characters,tag team competition and a suitable assortment of fighting moves to keep it interesting enough to enjoy for some time. And of course those classic Mortal Combat finishing moves we have all come to love so much. So if you despise gore,then definately stay away. If you want to make a comparison,then lets say for instance Virtual Fighter 5(rated T for Teen). Released in 2005 Virtual Fighter 5 has a larger assortment of fighting moves, a slightly less colorful aray of characters but does not offer "Tag Team" fighting. I love them both! Which one is a better game? I would say that it's just a matter of taste. I like more moves but I also enjoy the gore. Despite it all ... Love it!! A must get for MK fans everywhere!! Gorey, burtal, awesome!
This is a must get for any MK fan. The detail in this game is just grotesque, making it that much more great. The story mode offers a whole new experience and is longer than most might expect. Tag team, the challenge tower.... these are what make this game a lot of fun compared to past iterations. On top of everything else that makes MK great, the ps3 versions allows the use of Kratos from god of war. It even has a stage for God of War 3 with 3 different stage fatalities. The only downside is having to purchase the kombat pass in order to play online. All new copies come with it but if you get a used copy without the pass (unused), you'll have to dish out 10 bucks I think. Kratos and Krueger's newist addition to MK makes this outstanding!
I am a Mortal Kombat fan, for years to come. This was great, with all the graphics, and such, I will explain why the 4 stars down below. I will say there was a problem with PS3 only having Kratos, while Xbox 360 with out him. I feel he should have been in both. He is pretty badass though. An excellent addition to the family. Now there is a AWESOME addition as well, Freddy Krueger! I did not like how you had to buy rain while he was on the others. But I did it anyhow. There are many awesome moves. The story, some bits of it is very over done with the fighting. You hardly have a chance half the time. But it is a typical challenge. I would suggest this game to a MK vetern, this was a great new game out on the market, I have not tried all the features yet, but what I have, it is very intense, ... This had a few bad things, but all in all, it is pretty well, a typical MK challenge, which is fantastic!

Get it and you will not regret!
I played this a while ago in my buddy's spot. This is by far one of the most interesting game to play with friends together. The moves are awesome and those X-ray specials are just gore! I am amazed that the graphics are so cool. Fatalities are hilarious as usual. The best feature is its quick pace online multiplayer. You can tag with your buddy and fight other teams. The story is also cool, it gives you the background of this total madness and let you practice with different characters until you find one works best for you.
