Product arrived punctually, well packaged and in Very good condition. Ken Burns productions are always well produced, combining historical education with the Human interest aspect, on a topic not easily approached. The War. Fascinating, Engaging, Soul Searching
Everyone needs to review America's past sacrifices to grasp the importance and value of our freedom and the comfortable life we currently live in this present day. Race & ethnicity had no boundaries, when people learn as, Americans have, we share a common goal, freedom from repression/oppression. We Americans all are willing to lay down our lives for a common good! It's been that way from our countries birth. No inside or outside influence will stop Americans from the struggling to have freedom from repression/oppression of any kind, forien or domestic regardless of our race, ethnicity, gender it's in our DNA! American's are protectors of freedom. I have had the privilege to meet one of the men spotlighted in the documentary, as well as having members of my family that served in WW-1,-2, ... Everyone needs to review America's past sacrifices to grasp the importance and value of our freedom and the comfortable life we currently live in this present day. Race & ethnicity had no boundaries, when people learn as, Americans have, we share a common goal, freedom from repression/oppression. Watch this documentary and say a prayer of thanks for all those that have not returned home to enjoy the gift they purchased for us to live in. FREEDOM! (Learn from these Americans how precious & expensive freedom is.)

Very well made
Another job well done by Ken Burns!! My wife and I had grandfathers and great uncles that served in every branch, so this video series hits home. The stories of both servicemen and families that were home are engaging and are a real tear jerker. There is a real familiar feel to the lifestyles portrayed as well which makes it all the more an emotional experience!

Ken Burns - The War (2007, DVD)
I purchased this DVD for two reasons: a) I've always been interested in WWII as I grew up with many returning veterans and marveled at their stories and b) I'd previously seen Ken Burns "The Civil War" and admired the style that Mr. Burns used to present his material. I did not realize that "The War" would place its primary focus on home town stories rather than battlefield diaries. I was initially disappointed but changed my mind as the DVD's played on. "The War" serves up a side to WWII that has not been as well documented. Rather than seeing a retake on material presented in numerous other documentaries, "The War" presents new material. I recommend this DVD collection to WWII history buffs looking for something new.I purchased this DVD for two reasons: a) I've always been interested in WWII as I grew up with many returning veterans and marveled at their stories and b) I'd previously seen Ken Burns "The Civil War" and admired the style that Mr. Burns used to present his material. "The War" - from a WWII history buff
Though not the end-all of WWII documentaries, this is a great look at the events of WWII . It is unique in that the series deals with homefront issues 40% of the time; issues like rationing, women in the workplace, grieving/waiting families, etc. Such studies, as indepth as The War goes, are rare, and in this case is well integrated into the overall presentation. Concerning the war footage, it is all quite good - some I had not seen before, some I had. Many major land battles are covered (though not much on Wake Island), many of the major air, and probably the largest sea battles, though the latter could have been expanded upon, especially Leyte Gulf and Guadalcanal. Pre-Pearl Harbor events are limited in their scope and detail if present at all. In terms of following any particular ... In terms of following any particular battle, the series is good but understand that, like a real time event, the telling of it is punctuated with peripheral issues - homefront ones like I mentioned, or an aside in which an individual family is followed through some drama in their own personal lives. That makes following a battle a bit drawn out, but does force you to "experience" the event - piece of news here, piece there - as was suffered in real life. The music, by Winston Marsalis, is good but it's inserted TOO often in my opinion. Ever notice in Lord of the Rings that the music, while excellent, is almost ceaseless - virtually NO non-scored scenes?! Well, it's less so with The War, but you'll be able to hum the main theme sooner than you'd otherwise prefer. Overall the movie has the effect of conveying the loss and tragedy of war better than any other WWII documentary I've seen. It conveys the concentration camp horrors adequately, but less so the horror Japan inflicted on China. And while it doesn't go into great depth of the Nazi views on Judaism, Christianity, non-Aryans, etc... (as the foundations were laid pre-Pearl Harbor), it is fairly Right/Left balanced politically speaking - if you're worried about that. Ken Burn's America is neither atrocious nor perfect. He waves the flag about the right amount (though I would have waved it a little more). I'm on my second watching of it. Worth having.
