He shows that its roots in the 1920s can also be found in burgeoning cities among people who were frightened, dislocated, and uprooted by rapid changes in urban life. Many joined the Klan for sincere patriotic motives, unaware of the ugly prejudice that lay beneath the civic rhetoric. Mr. Jackson not only dissects the Klan's activities and membership, he also traces its impact on the public life of the twenties. Kenneth Jackson examines the successes & failures of the Klan in the Southern, Northern, & Western states. By drawing on quantitative data, Jackson argues that the Invisible Empire attracted not only members from the rural hinterlands but also potential Klansmen living in America’s largest metropolises. He contends that urban klaverns wielded substantial influence & power in the movement as a whole. For Jackson, the key to the success of the Hooded Order of the 1920s lay in the problems of daily life in the city. Even in the weaker chapters in western states, Klansmen exploited hostilities among Mexicans, Orients & whites to ensure that cities showed at least minimal favor towards 100% Americanism. An economic recession in the fall of 1920 did little to ease these tensions; “Americans yearned for a respite, for a return to ‘normalcy.’” In response to this nostalgia, the KKK emerged as the society that trumpeted 100% Americanism. The primary impetus for growth of the Invisible Empire was its anti-Catholicism & its staunch opposition to immigration. The Klan awakened smoldering prejudices in America that were fueled by Nativism & racial discrimination. Huddled masses from various European countries sought refuge in the waiting arms of the Statue of Liberty. These immigrants were often, in contrast to the first Europeans to settle North America, Catholic or Jewish & penniless. Ultimately, the Hooded Knights fought to establish powerful klaverns in urban zones of emergence, working class neighborhoods in which immigrants & blacks attempted forge new lives. Furthermore, the Invisible Empire felt threatened by Afro-Americans who they believed were “mental pygmies, unable & unwilling to perform any but the most menial tasks, & ever anxious to prey upon the purity of white women.” Especially in the Midwest & Northern cities, kleagles recruited super patriots to promote the cause of 100% Americanism & to defend against desegregation & “Negro economic & political competition” in industry. Tides of blacks into their homes & places of work were seen as a threat to white-American supremacy. The urban Hooded Knights in Jackson’s narrative were, however, not so different from their rural counterparts. Country & city Klansmen alike favored native-born, white Americans, fought to maintain their patriarchal status in the family, called for a return to Protestant values, supported prohibition, & at least temporarily expanded their pecuniary & political power within state & local governments. Thus, perhaps unintentionally, Jackson fails to acknowledge that urban Klansmen were simply not that different than those in small towns across America. Furthermore, Jackson fails to explain thoroughly the social tensions that gave way to resistance organizations such as the Ku Klux Klan & neglects to expound on the historical nature of such social movements. In an attempt to avoid condemning the KKK, Jackson seems sympathetic to the Hooded Order’s cause. He stresses the unwariness of its members yet fails to adequately address the venality of political leaders within its folds. Furthermore, quantitative data readily available in certain American cities perhaps led him to overstress their importance to the national movement. Despite its shortcomings, Jackson proffers a useful socio-economic analysis of the urban Klan & rebuts the interpretation set forth by John Mecklin.
