Product Information

Featuring fantastical puppet flora and fauna from Muppet man Jim Henson, this dark but wonderful children's movie follows Jen and Kira, two young Gelflings who are the last of their kind, as they try to fulfill the prophecy of the Dark Crystal. Jen's wise master reveals on his deathbed that only a Gelfling will mend the crystal that cracked 1,000 years ago and placed the land under the dark rule of the evil, selfish Skeksis. To break the prophecy, the Skeksis killed all the Gelflings, and only Jen and Kira escaped their wrath. Now, though, Jen and Kira must journey into the heart of the Skeksis castle to reach the crystal and return the land to its former goodness.Like all good children's movies, THE DARK CRYSTAL contains enough scary elements to keep the tension tight and the kids enthralled, while the puppet mastery will impress and tickle adults. THE DARK CRYSTAL was the first co-directorial effort of Frank Oz, who went on to direct THE MUPPETS TAKE MANHATTAN, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, IN & OUT, and BOWFINGER, among many other comedies.

    One of my all time favorites.

    Growing up with The Muppet Show, Jim Hensen was one of my heros. (I still smile when I think of Animal shouting "BANG DRUMS! BANG DRUMS!!") When The Dark Crystal was released to theaters, there wasn't a moment's doubt that I was going to see it. My best childhood friend and I mowed enough lawns that summer to see The Dark Crystal nine times. (With a seven mile bike ride in each direction to the movie theater. If our mothers had know that we were riding our bikes to the theater, we would have been talking with the wooden spoon.) When my daughter asked me about it, I was on the computer within minutes. Now, I think we've seen it twenty times and I still haven't gotten bored with it. A great movie to share with the kids or just to pass a couple of hours by yourself. It does have ...

    Best Movie of All Times?

    This movie expresses why Jim Henson is the legend that he is. This movie broke all boundaries when it was released, especially with storyline, costumes and puppetry. The Dark Crystal was rather dark for a movie generally aimed at a younger audience, but it still had the moral fiber that most family movies hold. I beleive that if every child in America sees this movie while growing up, each and every one will be the President of the United States, provided that they meet the social status, race, religion, gender, height, age, and political views requirement.

    Classic for Mom and Dad... slightly low tech 4 the kids

    Bought this so the kids could see why I would sometimes make the "mmmmmmm-mmmm" sound from the evil guy in the Dark Crystal. It was low tech in comparison to what's out there nowadays, but the kids enjoyed the muppets, especially Fizzgig, and the story line too. If you watched this as a kid, get it because it's something you can share with your kids.

    A Wonderful Trip to a Different World

    I've loved this movie for a long time! In my older age it does seem so fake in some areas, I admit, but I still love it! Since my VCR is dying, I decided to buy the DVD version of it, and I must say, this one had the best cover! I just love those Gelflings, and I can't wait til the second Dark Crystal movie comes out in 2009!!!

    Classic

    My wife thinks this movie is 'weird', but the truth is that it's one of the most imaginative, unique films made in the past 25 years. Yeah, the story line isn't all that original, but the characters and creatures that Jim Henson and company created really spark my child's imagination. Bottom line: Kids from 4 to 10 years old will most likely love this one!
