Waterloo - a historical snapshot of the events leading up to and including
Waterloo is another film produced by the Russian Version of Cecille B. Demile, Sergei Bondarchuk. As in the epic film produced earlier in his career(1968 War and Peace), there are huge crowd scenes displaying the battlefields and the ballrooms. The film centers on the career of Napoleon with a gripping account of his decision to be exiled to Elba after which the opening film credits appear. Another gripping account is provided when Napoleon and his 1000 men have a tense standoff with the French forces who promised to King Louis the 18th to bring Napoleon back in a cage! The French forces switch sides and everybody goes back to Paris to set the stage for Waterloo. A timeline is provided of the battle which terminates when 30,000 Prussian troops enter the scene on the side of Wellington. ... Waterloo is another film produced by the Russian Version of Cecille B. I liked the snippets shown during the course of the battle of the various soldiers on both sides discussing mundane matters and even on questioning why the killing and for what purpose. The film ends at the conclusion of the battle but I would have liked to see the final exile of Napoleon.I would have also liked to see a more detailed expose of the escape of Napoleon from Elba. However I realize if these items were included in the film the title would have to be changed to Napoleon instead of Waterloo.

Waterloo better than expected
After sending many requests to various TV channels to show this amazing War movie, without success, I finally decided to purchase this DVD version. Needless to say I was concerned that it would not work in my Blue Ray player and was also worried about the quality of the images. Both concerns were thankfully foundless as the DVD functioned perfectly and I was rewarded with a fantastic story, with one of the most remarkable battle re-enactments I have ever seen. Segei does justice to an incredible battle scene using thousands of Russian Army extras instead of CGI that has become the norm today. Waterloo 1970 Release (2005 DVD)
This DVD was a Wonderful Surprise! When I bought it I wasn't sure of kind of quality I'd be getting, However, after my first viewing I was delighted with both the Outstanding Sound and Picture quality and the added enjoyment of the film version is in Wide Screen Director's Cut which added an extra 20 minutes of great footage. I've been looking for this film for a very long time, I bought the VHS some years back but loaned it and never got it back. This is an Excellent Purchase and will be a Great addition to anyones DVD collection as it is to mine.This DVD was a Wonderful Surprise! After defeating France and imprisoning Napoleon on Elba, ending two decades of war, Europe is shocked to find Napoleon has escaped and has caused the French Army to defect from the King back to him. The best of the British generals, Arthur Welsley was victorious in Spain, but has never faced Napoleon. Welsley stands between Napoleon with a mixed army of Prussians, Mercenaries, Brits and Belgians. Napoleon's victory will plunge Europe back into a long term war. The two meet at Waterloo where the fate of Europe will be decided. This is the battle that earned Welsley the title of Duke of Wellington. The 1970 production (DIRECTOR: Sergei Bondarchuk PRODUCER: Dino De Laurentis) featrures the following actors/actresses: Orson Welles; Christopher Plummer; Jack Hawkins; and, Virginia ... The movie is superbly cast. Rod Stieger is entirely credible as the aging but still fiercely ambitious and egotistical Napoleon. Christopher Plummer is pitch-perfect as the aristocratic Duke of Wellington, highly capable leader of a British-Dutch Army, acting in concert with a Prussian Army under General Blutcher. Orson Welles has a nice cameo as Louis XVIII. The supporting cast universally look their parts. The Battle of Waterloo has been challenging for generations of historians to describe. Likewise, this movie dramatization can be very difficult to follow. The movie faithfully depicts various dramatic moments in the battle, although it seems to presume some prior knowledge on the part of the viewer as to the context of those moments. It repeatedly changes points of view, alternating for the most part between Napoleon and Wellington. There are several supporting vignettes involving Marshall Ney and others. The movie succeeds in building up enormous dramatic tension as the battle nears its climax, even if the viewer may not be entirely clear on what is happening and why. This movie is highly recommended to fans of the Napoleonic era as perhaps the best-available dramatization of the Battle of Waterloo. But beware of versions that have been transferred to DVD that are of poor quality.

A great historical film of a kind not made anymore.
This is the kind of epic movie hollywood made in the 50's and 60's, with a cast of literally thousands. Of course now those thousands of actors playing soldiers are produced with computer graphics. The movie traces the abdication of Napoleon, his escape and triumphant return to France, culminating in the Battle of Waterloo. It has Rod Steiger playing Napoleon, with all the usual british actors you recognize such as Christopher Plummer as Wellington and Jack Hawkins. Rod Steiger plays Napoleon to the hilt, chewing up every scene, or maybe the other actors are somewhat stiff, but he does a great job, and you can almost feel that charisma Napoleon was said to possess that made thousands march to their death for him. I like todays movies, and I can appreciate what computers can ... This is the kind of epic movie hollywood made in the 50's and 60's, with a cast of literally thousands.
