Embrace the light guage strings!
I needed a set of strings for a bass project that involves a lot of slapping, popping and general acrobatics so I decided to give these a try based on online reviews. I must admit I was skeptical, but for $17 I figured what the hell and went for it. What a pleasant surprise! Yes they are perfect for slap / pop as advertised, but I was really surprised at the tone they have for all types of playing. You will have to use a light touch for fingerstyle or pick playing, which I don't find to be a negative, just different. I don't think I would use these as my main string for straight fingerstyle, but if I had to pick a string to cover everything these would be hard to beat. The strings for a Rickenbacker bass.
I have tried using different strings for years on Rickenbacker 4001 or 4003 bass guitars and always come back to Rotosounds. I used the .45-105 set for years. I know the great John Entwhistle came up with that size set, but I personally like these better. Easy on the hands, you can bend them easily ( though not flappy at all). You get a great, full sound with these. Not as abrasive as the older sets could be, on hands or frets. You do get that hard hitting tone! Only for those in the know...
These are very specialized strings. Extra light, for poppin' and slappin' ! Note bendin' ! Probably only good for active basses or preamped ones, and really only for that style of playing. Maybe bright bebop... but not really for anything near a P Bass sound. Have them on two J basses, a MM. Put them on a PJ bass - they're okay but a bit too clean and bright - not much character through that P bass pickup. MMs are okay, but it's the J pickup that loves this gauge set! Best funk bass strings....PERIOD!
I've been using Rotosound FM66s for many years now. They are exclusively used on almost all my bass guitars, and have long-lasting quality sound. Construction is absolutely superb, and have a great resonance and sustain as well. I've installed these on a host of basses including Ibanez SR370, Sire M7, Cort Curbow, and Washburn MB-8. All have sounding incredible with these strings, and their longevity makes it an even better value. In most cases, I've only had to spend about $17/pack, but you have to search around to find that deal. I would highly recommend these strings for anyone wanting that Mark King slap/funk bass sound.
