Product Information

An unforgettable novel about finding a lost piece of yourself in someone else. Khaled Hosseini, the #1 New York Times -bestselling author of The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns , has written a new novel about how we love, how we take care of one another, and how the choices we make resonate through generations. In this tale revolving around not just parents and children but brothers and sisters, cousins and caretakers, Hosseini explores the many ways in which families nurture, wound, betray, honor, and sacrifice for one another; and how often we are surprised by the actions of those closest to us, at the times that matter most. Following its characters and the ramifications of their lives and choices and loves around the globe--from Kabul to Paris to San Francisco to the Greek island of Tinos--the story expands gradually outward, becoming more emotionally complex and powerful with each turning page.

Reviews
Praise for The Kite Runner "A powerful book . . . an intimate account of family and friendship, betrayal and salvation that requires no atlas or translation to engage and enlighten us."- The Washington Post Book World "This powerful first novel . . . tells a story of fierce cruelty and fierce yet redeeming love. . . . Hosseini gives us a vivid and engaging story that reminds us how long his people have been struggling to triumph over the forces of violence-forces that continue to threaten them even today."- The New York Times Book Review "A marvelous first novel . . . an incredible story of the culture. It's an old-fashioned kind of novel that really sweeps you away."- San Francisco Chronicle Praise for  A Thousand Splendid Suns "Spectacular . . . Hosseini's writing makes our hearts ache, our stomachs clench and our emotions reel."- USA Today "Just as good as, if not better than, Hosseini's best-selling first book, The Kite Runner ."- Newsweek "Hosseini has the storytelling gift."- Los Angeles Times "[Love] is the emotion-subterranean, powerful, beautiful, illicit, and infinitely patient-that suffuses the pages."- O: The Oprah Magazine, "Like [Hosseini's] previous books, the new novel is a complex mosaic, a portrait of the Afghan diaspora as it is folded into the West and of those left behind. . . . The book is elevated by a strong sense of parable and some finely drawn characters and is inventively constructed as it leaps from voice to voice."- Esquire "A book we can't wait for in 2013 . . . [Hosseini] broadens the scope with a multigenerational family saga that takes place in locations around the world."- Entertainment Weekly "Hosseini returns with an instantly relatable novel that follows generations of a troubled family across the Middle East."- Marie Claire "The beautiful writing, full of universal truths of loss and identity, makes each section a jewel . . . Hosseini's eye for detail and emotional geography makes this a haunting read."- Publishers Weekly "Captivating and affecting . . . A masterful and compassionate storyteller, Hosseini traces the traumas and scarring of tyranny, war, crime, lies, and illness in the intricately interconnected, heartbreaking, and transcendent lives of his vibrantly realized characters to create a grand and encompassing tree of life."- Booklist (starred review) "Hosseini weaves a gorgeous tapestry of disparate characters joined by threads of blood and fate. . . . In this uplifting and deeply satisfying book, Hosseini displays an optimism not so obvious in his previous works. Readers will be clamoring for it."- Library Journal (starred review) "In And the Mountains Echoed , Khaled Hosseini presents a multitude of windows into the souls affected by these events. The novel's rich kaleidoscope of images coalesces around one theme: the powerful and often excruciating legacy of family ties within the maelstrom of history."- Shelf Awareness "Fiction Top Pick . . . Engrossing . . . Ultimately, And the Mountains Echoed is about the human endeavor to transcend difference."- Bookpage

Avis les plus pertinents

  • Complex, inspiring, educational, human.

So few authors write in such a way that one is drawn into the story, becoming nearly integral to the plot and characters. Hosseini does this in his third and last “movement” that began with, Kite Runner – an exceptional book of a compelling tale and deep human resonance – concluding with …Mountain Echoed. Earn insight into Afghanistan before, during the Russian invasion, and after, including our (U.S.) complex and truncated intercession, through this book and those that preceded it. Share Humanity with the oppressed, the villainized, the refugee of today and of yesterday in its pages. Over my 60+ years of extensive reading, I can think of only two or three authors whose scribblings have stirred me to the level of Dr. Hosseini. I await a fourth book, and will consider this an unfinished ...

  • An interesting comeback

I enjoyed reading Hosseini again and was a great fan of his earlier books. The Kite Runner was spectacular and a Thousand Splendid Suns amazing but a hard read due to the violence . This was a softer book. Harder to follow and sometimes I got lost. It did not really tie together for me. Nevertheless I stayed with it till the end. We read it for my Book Club. I would have read it anyway. Not sure why it gets the acclaim it does. Perhaps for a younger audience. I am curious how my daughter will review it. She is 29 and read the other two with me years ago and neither of us could put those down...Marie

  • Harder to follow than Hosseini's other books.

I recommend it mainly due to the fact his other books were so great. I found The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns were much better. This one seemed to bounce around a lot and at times I didn't know who I was reading about until a couple of pages in. Some characters seemed to have not much to do with the main characters and just caused a bit of distraction. Neither here nor there, it was still a good book but in my opinion, the other too were by far better.

  • Touching and exceedingly well written

A stunningly well written novel. This man has got to be one of the greatest living writers. Very touching and sometimes emotionally hard to read, but I loved it. His other novels are also great.

  • One for History!

What a wonderful read. This is the kind of book one is unable to put down. The everyday tales people of Afghanistan, Europe and the USA face when different cultures are woven together. The tragedies that ensue, often by the mere turn of the world wheel. I highly recommend this read, tears, anger, sadness and understanding of the human element.
