Bill McKay (Robert Redford), an idealistic young lawyer and son of a famous governor, is pressured into running for the United States Senate against the popular incumbent, with the assurance that he will lose and not have to give up his integrity or ideals. However, as the campaign deepens, he finds himself giving in, allowing himself to be manipulated as the polls slowly change and swing in his favor. Soon his backers decide that they want him to win after all. By the time Election Day arrives, McKay has become the person that he used to speak so vehemently against. Working from an Oscar-winning script by former Eugene McCarthy speechwriter Jeremy Larner, Ritchie films THE CANDIDATE with a heavy dose of semi-documentary realism that makes for an emotionally impacting experience.

A Great Look Back at SF in the 1970's
Although very dated this film is a good look at running for office.... The reason we bought it is the film shows what the bay area looked like way back when. You can see the long closed Island Drive in Flea Market in Alameda, CA (not to be confused with the current Alammeda Point Show which came years later and has no relationship to the one in the movie) and the Paramount Theater in Oakland long before it was restored (much of the film was shot in the mostly abandoned theater before restoration). Now there are two restored theaters Paramount and Fox in downtown Oakland, at the time of the film there were none. I also love looking at the campaign parade on Montgomery Street in the San Francisco Financial District way back when since so much has changed there and yet so much remains the ... Great condition of this aged DVD. The ending line of the movie is very thought provoking.

The Candidate - Excellent Movie
Robert Redford is one of the greatest actors of our time. I would highly recommend The Candidate to anyone who appreciates his acting abilities.
