Product Information

Based on a real life incident, this disturbing drama serves as a seminal study of disillusioned and alienated youth. Set in a small rural town, the local clique of slacker teens is pulled apart when Samson (Daniel Roebuck) kills his girlfriend on the banks of the river and then callously shows off the dead body to his friends. The teens are so numb and ambivalent to the reality of their situation that they remain relatively unphased by the murder of one of their own. Crispin Glover is brilliant as the drugged out paranoid, Layne, who sympathizes with the killer, and plots to hide him at the house of an eccentric recluse (Dennis Hopper), who is rumored to have comitted a similar crime in the 1960s. Keanu Reeves and Ione Skye co-star as Matt and Clarissa, two friends who are drawn together in their realization that something is horribly wrong. In this startling portrait of a morally void society, director Tim Hunter creates a remarkable world of dysfunction and dead-end lives that is haunting in its accuracy.

Fascinating View of Punk Mentality
Well constructed story of teen amorality with great unforgettable characters. Dennis Hopper, Joshua Miller, Crispin Glover, Daniel Roebuck, and Keanu all bring to life this dark story of murder and indifference. A lot of directors have tried to capture this space on film unsuccessfully: this one succeeds and is worth seeing...again.

I bought this movie because I didn't watch many movies between '86 and even now and recently saw a bio on K-Reeves on youtube and wanted to see some of his early work. This movie epitomizes '80's movie-making; neurotic, detached and over-dramatic in scipt and acting performances. Never-the-less I could see some 'cult' potential with the combination of Dennis Hopper's outrageous character and Crispin Glover's rehashing George McFly for another brutal 100 and some minutes sometimes senseless twists and turns in the story. But truly looking back-there was guys like that in every class-not always handling the pressures of the trouble they get themselves into. I did find it entertaining if maybe for it's historical context-being from that generation. Reeves performance was great-I thought, ... Unbelievable!
This movie is based on a true story. I lived in western Montana when this murder occurred. Everyone was shocked and everyone was talking about it. Just ONE of several teens who saw the body reacted with empathy and shock. The killer told anyone who would listen that he had murdered a girl and showed her dead, nude body to many classmates. (He's a sociopath in my opinion) - Pay attention to what he says and does. He goes on with his daily routine and is proud of what he's done. It was days before the only concerned teen broke from the safety of the group and went to the police. An excellent example of 'groupthink', whereby no one feels a connection to the dead girl or how she died. A complete disconnect, with no sense of responsibility or connection to the crime after the fact. ... This movie is based on a true story. I lived in western Montana when this murder occurred. Things that people do could get you in trouble
Based on crazy teenagers and the trouble they get into. Life is tough you learn that and see that. Friends try to help but sometimes its not for the best.
