The phenomenon of extreme asceticism in the early Byzantine period was widespread and turned a number of ascetics into popular figures. The three saints lives recorded in this book are classic examples of the celebrity acquired through extreme behavior such as living on top of a column or in a wooden cage. In a world full of physical and mental disease their power manifested itself through healings of both disorders. While sometimes monotonous the different types of cures are interesting on a psychological level.
