À propos de ce produit

Product Information

This serious-minded, large-scale historical saga casts light on a shadowy corner of American history, the "St. Patrick's Brigade" in the Mexican-American war of the 1840s. Near the front lines, John Riley (Berenger), a respected Irish-American officer, rebels when several US Army soldiers, fellow immigrants, are brutalized because of their Catholic faith. He goes AWOL with the men, eventually siding with the Mexicans in their fight to hold onto territories that would become the American southwest. It's a tragic tale, recalling the era when Catholics (and Irish ones inparticular) were widely mistrusted and despised by the country's Protestant majority. Still, it's no wonder that the whitewashed, remember-the-Alamo version of American history has persevered in previous dramas; between the factionalized Mexican side, the conflicted Riley and even the war-weary US "invaders," it's hard to tell the good guys from the bad guys here, who is fighting who and why, and Riley's romance with a Hispanic hottie muddies the picture even more. Still, ONE MAN'S HERO is worth comparing with another factual epic about a renegade warrior who casts his lotwith another culture - LAWRENCE OF ARABIA.

  • One Man's Hero is a wonder!

History is a little scrambled, but all together a good read. Berenger is Excellent, and the supporting cast was well chosen. The brand new copy was priced at 26 bucks or so, probably because this film never went into release in the US except in an extremely limited sense. MGM was bought by Universal at the time, and Universal didnt want to bother with it.

  • Action adventure historical western depicts the predjudice/plight of immegrating Irish in early 1800's causing many to fight against the U.S.

Good historical depiction of the Irish who fought for Mexico in the Mexican-American war in the 1840's. Good war action for that time period, historically accurate. Explains why there are so many Irish surnames in the southwest U.S. today.... Recommend.

  • One Man's Hero :

What a terrific tribute to the San Patricios during the war with Mexico! Recommended by an Irish/Catholic friend of mine (who is also a history buff), this was a must see. It was a good story of the struggle of a band of early Irish Catholics, who fought for the U.S. but were chastised by their (non-Catholic) superiors for their devotion to their faith. They knew morally that when it comes down deciding on what is most important for one's soul, your faith is what you depend on, and worth risking their lives for. Viva La San Patricios!

  • Pretty Good Movie

I had heard about this movie and was always curious about the San Patricios (St. Patricks) Battalion. This movie is not exactly historically accurate but what the heck. It was still pretty good. It shows how intolerate the US Army was towards other religions in the 1800 (especially against the Catholics and the Irish). As is usual at the end of an unpopular war someone has to be made an example of.In this case it was the Irish soldiers who received a fair trial before being executed. All in all, though, I thought it was a fairly good movie. I have read reviews that compare this to Lawrence of Arabia- Not quite!!
