Synopsis
For soldiers in the field, or for campers, hikers, fishermen, and hunters, a basic knowledge of map and compass work is essential for safety. This is the official US Army guide, but it can and should be read by anyone who spends time in the outdoors. This practical easy-to-understand official manual requires no prior knowledge for anyone just beginning to learn how to find their way in the outdoors. Sections here cover: Map care Comprehension of map symbols Military symbols Grid reference systems Interpretation of aerial photographs. After the basics are covered, the second half moves to land navigation - varying terrains, elevations, day-night variations. Map and compass work is thoroughly explained. Finally, extreme scenarios - desert, mountain, jungle, arctic, and urban terrains - are all explained and detailed. "The purpose of this field manual is to provide a standardized source document for Army-wide reference on 'map reading' and 'land navigation'. This manual applies to every soldier in the Army regardless of service branch, MOS, or rank. This manual also contains both doctrine and training guidance on these subjects. Part One addresses map reading and Part Two, land navigation. The appendixes include a list of exportable training materials, a matrix of land navigation tasks, an introduction to orienteering, and a discussion of several devices that can assist the soldier in land navigation.", It requires no prior knowledge of these subjects. Sections include map care, comprehension of map symbols, military symbols, grid reference systems, and interpretation of aerial photographs. After the basics are covered, the second half moves to land navigation - varying terrains, elevations, day-night variations. Map and compass work is thoroughly explained. Finally, extreme scenarios - desert, mountain, jungle, arctic, and urban terrains - are all explored.

  • A condensed volume of land navigation.

This book is very similar to the one I used years ago but with the civilian touch in composition. Most manuals, I remember, the covers were white. This manual provides good information on the land navigation side for civilians but won't help with some of the map reading. Overall is a good reference when in the woods with or without a GPS device.

  • Great Book!

Great book....Goes from absolute beginner level through advanced map reading and Land Navigation. I wanted it as a review since at one time had I been an Army Surveyor and remembered the book which was a basic part of our training. Needs some extrapolation since all army maps are in Meters, but the basics are the same. Refers to Mils in the section for azimuth. 1 Mil is equal to 1 meter wide at a Kilometer (1000 Meters) distance and is used to direct Artillery fire from extended distances of up to 32 Miles,or more. The conversion is roughly 17.8 mils per degree. just don't let it throw you and insert Degree's where it says mils. Everything's applicable whether in Mils or Degrees, in feet or in meters. Great review and reference item. bwatts
