Zack Mayo (Richard Gere) has nothing--the son of an alcoholic, indifferent military father, he's grown up in the Philippines living on top of a brothel. But after college he decides he wants more and, despite his father's mockery, enrolls in the navy's Officer Candidate School to become a jet pilot. His sergeant, brilliantly played by Louis Gossett Jr., makes his life a living hell from day one, but Zack won't quit. The candidates are warned to stay away from the local girls looking for naval husbands, but Zack and his bunkmate, Sid (David Keith), find themselves falling for two friends, Paula (Debra Winger) and Lynette (Lisa Blount), who work at the local paper mill. Zack fights his feelings for Paula, determined to let nothing sway him from his goals. But as the hellish weeks of training go by, Zack begins to see that maybe he can't do it alone--and that what's getting him through are his friends in the ranks, and the girl he's been pushing away. Widely acclaimed at the time of its release, director Taylor Hackford's inspiring film is a romance for the ages.

    Great movie

    This is about honor, and whats right. Being a right person, and displaying real character. This movie leads to a standard of how people are to behave. Now days, people don't think, they go by there feeling, or other friends feelings. This leads to many poor quality decisions. Please review this message and put it into action!!!

    Great movie, a real addition to anyone's DVD collection. Romance, friendship and growth of young men in officer cadet school. Richard Gere is just awesome to look at and a great actor, too. Louis Gossett, Jr. is the tough instructor of the officer cadets. Debra Winger is gorgious and plays a great role as Gere's ove interest. David Keith plays a great role but ends tragically

    An Officer and a Gentleman

    This is one of my favorites of Richard Gere's films. I grew up in the military so I could well identify with Deborah Winger's role in this Film. Lou Gossett is phenominal in his role and won the academy award for it. It is the story of what is required of an officer and a gentleman. It is really well done and covers how this officer grew up and what he had to overcome to become an officer and a gentleman. It is a classic.

    an officer and a gentleman lives up to its title!

    preview of pretty woman where the charming prince rescues his future princess. Gere displays what every woman wants and what every man needs to know to get and kep that woman it is the special things in life the simple pleasant things in life that stand out money counts and always matters, but the females I have dated respond better when the things are done to and for her that are simple and pleasing but not evident from other past suitors

    Modern Classic

    Modern Classic, lots of well-rounded character development. Louis Gossett Jr. nailed it; cool special features, with an older Richard Gere and Lou Gossett. Some not-so-PC (refreshingly so) dialog.
