He was also the only non-human chosen as one of ESPN's "50 Greatest Athletes of the Century." The tale of "Big Red" continues to be a classic, more than 30 years after its initial publication. Walt Disney Studios is scheduled to release the still untitled movie based on the book in October 2010. We will have access to all of the key art from the movie for this tie-in which we will be utilizing for the cover. Currently out of print, "Secretariat" will be the official movie tie-in edition.

An EXCELLENT Tribute To Americas Most Beloved Racehorse!
As a huge fan of Secretariat- this was a must read and I couldnt wait to start it. While I must admit that it was a little different from what I expected- seedier, harsher and more dramatic then even the movie was- it is still a very well written book. Here was my one and only problem with it, ...I am an avid reader and this book at times had a tendency to lose me a bit. I figured out midway thru that it was due to the amount of detail that Nack often goes into when describing certain facts of the story behind this great horse, which normally would be a good thing, but in some cases it seemed to be too many facts crammed into a paragraph that had me reading and re reading it too make sure I had it all straight. It wasnt so much facts that surrounded Secretariat himself, but the facts behind the long line of horses he came from, there running times, records and breeding- although this all did come together at the end and then I did appriciate the great detail he went into- as it made the records and feats that Secretariat broke really stand out. I normally really love this kind of thing- I think it was just the amount of information and the way it was delivered that made it hard to follow at times- It just took a long time to get there- its hard reading and left me with the feeling I needed to take notes to remember all of it. The other facts that I didnt find as appealing was the background of every syndicate member and so on. It left me tempted to skip those places as it seemed to drag on and on. HOWEVER!- that is the only fault I could find with this book! It is definately not the fluffy story that came to be in the Disney movie, as it unfolds you come to see the true side of racing complete with drama, money, prestige, jealousy and the realities of what these horses face. While I did find the differences between the movie and the book a little disheartening at times- you come away with the REAL story of this amazing horse and an even deeper respect for all that he had accomplished. There were things that surprised me( Penny Tweedys dislike for Whittaker, the background of Sham and most shocking the rivalry between Big Red and Riva Ridge), things that blew my mind and things that will stay with me from now on whenever I think about this Super Horse...its all here and is wonderfully captured within Nacks story telling. My favorite parts in this book was the colts playful interactions with those whom he was closest too and the racing scenes were so well played out it made you feel like you were there riding it out with Turcotte or in the stands next to the rest of his fans cheering him on in the homestretch! All in all this is a must read book! Dont let the FEW boring parts get too you...they are kept at a minimal and it IS WORTH IT too power thru it! This book will leave you with an even deeper respect for " Big Red" and Nack does an excellent job of bringing those breathtaking rides right thru the book. You will also come away trusting Nacks credibility when you read in the end the way he describes how he came to be one of Secretariats first fans- you will feel the love and admiration he had for this great horse and it will all come together beautifully as you realize Nack has written this whole book not only to document an unforgettable moment in time but a tribute to the greatest racehorse who has ever lived! You will come away wishing you had been there to witness it while feeling like in some way thru this book - you were there.

Tells it like it REALLY was! The best horse that ever lived !!
Glad I read this, but AFTER I saw the movie, so I could enjoy both the movie and the book. The book had the real story not the Hollywood version. It has lots of statistics. But it was interesting. Mr Nack is VERY thorough. If you love horses, especially Secretariat, Don't miss it. He is /was my favorite horse ever!
