In another room a ravishing young secretary (Joan Crawford) succumbs to the advances of an arrogant industrialist (Wallace Beery). In yet another, a fatally ill office clerk (Lionel Barrymore) spends his life savings in a desperate effort to derive some pleasure from this bleak and brief existence. Downstairs at the bar, a disfigured doctor (Lewis Stone) dispenses wry commentary as people come and go. This precedent-setting ensemble piece of frothy, bubbly, tear-jerking super soap cemented the A-list status of its director, Edmund Goulding. It's an oft-imitated, never duplicated spectacle; the old Hollywood star system lighting up the sky with all the wattage at its disposal.

An Essential Piece of Cinema
This film won an academy award for "Best Picture" for a reason. Starring the ever beautiful and immortalized starlet, Greta Garbo, as well as a young Joan Crawford, who stole every scene with her ability to flawlessly exemplify the razor sharp wit, charm and good heart of her character. The leading men include the very gentle and charming John Barrymore, as well as Lionel Barrymore, who plays the role of a desperate working class man with nothing to lose almost too well! This film is not only beautifully directed, edited, and wonderfully cast, it is also accurate about human nature in every sense displayed. Grand Hotel is light-hearted and tragic. It is as bittersweet as life itself. Take the time to sit back and absorb the cinematic masterpiece that it is.This film won an academy award for "Best Picture" for a reason. More Stars than there are in the Heavens........
One of the Greatest Films ever made in Hollywood. This DVD deserved a great transfer with plenty of additional film material added including original trailer, and other advertisements that were used at the time of the Film's initial release. The picture quality is great, and wonderful additional perks!! This DVD print of MGM's Grand Hotel was made by the Hollywood Studio that boasted more Stars than there are in the Heavens! And in this picture, I think MGM was correct in using such a statement as this picture meets that criteria! Highly Recommended.One of the Greatest Films ever made in Hollywood. I adore this movie.. I started crying the minute Garbo came on the screen.. Thank you for making this movie affordable. Great movie at a great value

Grand Hotel DVD
Recently I have become a fan of classic movies. One of my favorite actors of the 30's and 40's is Lionel Barrymore. I caught this movies on TCM a while back and just had to own it. I love this kind of movie, recent or classic. It's a tale where the characters stories are intermingled over the period of a short time in a Berlin hotel. Funny, romantic, poignant at times. What else could you ask for in a movie?? Luckily I was able to grab this DVD for a low, low price.Recently I have become a fan of classic movies. This is a great classic, great actors, I love the comings and goings of people , out of the hotel, personally ide never stay in a German hotel back then but a great movie.
