    Commoner Smith's efforts launched geology, explained how fossils reveal the age of ancient rocks.

    There are so many parallel stories described in that book: the struggle of the main figure, William Smith, the class structure of the early 1800's, their debtor's prisons, the country's growth and quest for more coal, the condition of the roads in northern England, and more. By contrast a history book would contain just a list of facts without the glue that made everything feel so real. I bought 3 copies of the book and lent them to friends.

    It was O.K..... I guess

    Needed this book for class. For the most part the book is pretty informative. However, the author at different points gets off subject. It just seems exhaustive when the author goes on about his own life, rather than the person who actually made the map.
