Judas sadistic, violent, & evil
How many ways can I say horrible in english, then in every other language? I saw the original as a kid, at my mother's church, after a lifetime of hearing the two vinyl album (including utero) I loved it and have never stopped loving it to my old lady present. I have no problem with modernized versions (loved John Legend version to pieces) this could have been a wonderful turn of the century new melinia version, but did not cut it; worst thing: main character portrayal Judas. I would never expect anyone to come close to Carl Anderson brilliant performance in original film. This portrayal of Judas was just plain wrong. He was evil, sinister, violent, and sadistic which made his conflict over betrayal not the least bit believable. My favorite part, when Judas comes back from the dead for ... Instead of an angel, Judas returns as the devil and taunts and tortures Jesus (almost as much as the scene tortures me) During the performance there is this weird homoerotic thing between jesus and Judas; I would not object to this if done well; it was not and included sadomasochism given how hateful Judas is....many other problems other reviewers have already adequately covered; one of my favs: Pilot dream was a porn scene- bingo! That character was way over the top over acting.......Kiaophas (sp?) and Romans looks like they left the Matrix and got lost. Many details make you ask "why?" "What the Hell for?..." like flashlight flashing flasher dressed in all black, women with black head scarves and thick black lip stick and eyeliner....???....and other scenery, costume, and prop inconsistencies (like AR-15 for Apostles, WTF?), gangster street wear here and over there, yet stereotypical middle eastern wear during the scene where the temple is turned into gambling, sales, strippers, and other debotchery that is lost and entangled in busy imagery that is way over the top. Jesus? Very underwhelming. As a talented singer I know how hard Ted Niely worked and how much talent this role requires; that guy? Same for Judas.

Amazing and Powerful
My first review ever... but I just saw this today and felt very powerful about it, so immediately wished to purchase it and saw these reviews. I just have to say ... Honestly, I am not really into the Christian hype in today's society, so I didn't choose to watch this for religious reasons- although it seems to follow the story line very closely so I can't see why ANY religious person wouldn't want to see this or allow their teens to see it unless they are against the music expression of rock. A bit of violence, of course, but that's the story and it's theatrically done. This production is filled with artistry and power. It keys in on the humanity of the characters and the choices they made, while connecting the ideas to today's society. The ... The staging and camera work of this sound-stage London production is absolutely beautiful and invokes many connections about events that have happened throughout other eras. No only that, this DVD promotes and introduces a theatrical sytle for many who don't attend live theatre. That live theatre medium has the ability to allow audiences to see and interpret in a different way than a hollywood movie. The original movie is a classic of that era which I hope will always be remembered... but I really think that this production has more to offer to today than a peek into the 60s/70s. It takes away all the hollywood gloss and makes it about the characters and story. It portrays the frustrations of the situation. Instead of glossing over things and going straight towards the aftermass of happy peace for all. It really reflects the anger and violence seen around us in today's society and in today's youth. The characters can be seen looking for answers, seeing hope and making choices. The only problems I had in this version was that Mary Mag. over ennunciates- which wasn't really a big deal, and the Herod song. Although amazing, clever and fun in production value, I don't think the choice for Herod to "Rex Harrison" the number was apt... or that the actor who played Herod is as good a showman or showstopper as the song allows for... or that it came even close to the original movie rendition. Seemed more like they found a famous British actor (from The Young Ones, Drop Dead Fred, etc.) and added him as a cameo for star power. The real star power, however, comes from the aptly cast Glenn Carter- JC and Jérôme Pradon- Judas. Thank you IMDb.com! =o). Being a professional stage manager for 15 years, I loved seeing the incredible, professional quality of the production: from scenic elements, costuming and lighting to acting ability, staging and audience connections. I hope that in our future more live stage productions will choose this form of media to display their work for those of us who cannot get to NY or London to see it. If you are looking for a powerful score, beautiful imagery, amazing performances and a new slant on an old story. This is definitely a Rock Opera you should see.

Great 1995 updated version of the 1973 original. Great Music - visuals
I have purchased and watched three versions of J.C. Superstar. I liked them all and each one had something different and special of it's own. The original movie came out when I would have been the age it was aimed at (20). I can see how each of the later ones (this one from 1995 and the one from 2012) were also updated and still aimed at the contemporary 20-30 year olds. It's amazing how each movie could be so different yet have the nearly exact libretto (words/music). I highly recommend seeing all three movies.I have purchased and watched three versions of J.C. Highly recommend! Only dealer that had the 2000 version ive been looking for. DVD arrived early and still sealed in original packaging. Will definitely be looking to see what other movies they have that I cant find anywhere else!

Horrible off tune version of this play
Having been in love with Jesus Christ Superstar featuring Ted Neeley and seeing it twice live, I was very curious about this new version of it. I have never heard such a group of people in a musical that could not sing. It was painful to watch this movie. There was not one performer in this movie that knew how to carry a proper tune. I bought this on a lark and wish I hadn't. I do not recommend this movie.
