Now THIS is how to write a fun sci-fi story!
Like so many others, I find the juvenile works of Robert Heinlein truly wonderful in their ability to be meaningful, modest, and extremely rewarding to read for ANYBODY (we are all still children, no matter our age, right?) The villains in this story are easy to hate because they seem so REAL while being so egotistically selfish. Jim and Frank, the two main protagonists, are even more well-written in my opinion, due in no small part to the fact that we’re following the story from their perspective (most of the time, though it should be noted that the narrative transitions came off so smooth and sensible for me, the story was made all the stronger for them!). The boys might be a little over-proud now and then, but what do you expect from two young frontiersmen who’ve had to grow up in an ... The boys might be a little over-proud now and then, but what do you expect from two young frontiersmen who’ve had to grow up in an environment where you practice more survival methods in a day than most of us Earthers will ever know? Expect the main characters to get through their ordeals with critical common sense mixed with creative problem solving, innovative-but-consistent technology, and some good survivors' fervor. I thought the heroes not only realized all the obvious problems, they also covered the hidden ones in a smart, professional way that compliments the reader’s intelligence just as much as it humbly presents the story’s intelligence. The aliens actually DO come off as aliens, while each still retains its own uniquely-written personality to make them interesting individuals, regardless of species. I believe this can be summed up in the fact that one of the Martian characters is named K’boomch. How could I ever NOT love an alien species that names one of its members "K’boomch?!" The only negative side that I saw, from my modern sensibilities, was the traditionalist view Heinlein had about gender roles, but even in this he’s willing to show a little flexibility. Add that to the fact that I thought the female characters were still likeable and respected, and this little issue was easy enough for me to accept. Great story! Great characters! Great way to fill up that extra time during Christmas break with something fun! This is definitely one of my favorites.

Red Planet by Robert A. Heinlein
Ohh, Willis! How little we know about you and your fellow Martians! I read this story through in one sitting. It's that good. The only hint at Heinlein's future explosive perversity in the book are the two clergymen that share a house. His readers will find the allusion entertaining. The characters are beautifully and simply woven. The antiquarians will find the boys manner of speaking quite retronique. Doc MacRae is my favorite character; and I believe Heinlein has shown the most of himself in this character. Solipsism is a beautiful philosophy. You will find Doc's hatred of "progression" to be most eloquently stated. The story is about 2 boys who hail from a Martian colony--the head of which is one of them's father. They share the mostly unexplored-as-of-yet Mars with various native creatures--the most interesting being the mysterious giant tripodal Martians who dwell deep within their ancient and emptied cities, and strange fluff-ball creatures called "bouncers". By the end of the book Heinlein has shown us an extrordinary alien civilization, an emancipated Human-Martian colony, and the fall of the corrupt incestual elite powers of Earth. Inbetween is a grand adventure.

Classic Heinlein juvenile
"Red Planet" is the best of Heinlein's 'juveniles' The tropes are those found in "Between Planets", "The Rolling Stones" and even "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress". On Mars, two teen age boys at the cusp of adulthood find themselves pitted against an imperial and uncaring Earth. Although they did not choose to fight, they find that their choices are either to do that which is honorable or betray their sense of right and wrong. By choosing the honorable option, they are forced into a conflict they do not fully understand, but they believe, from their limited perspective, that what they have chosen to do is right. As in all Heinlein's juveniles, the pace is fast, the choices un-ambiguous, girls more or less nonexistent, and good triumphs over evil. The locale is exotic but the basic ...
