    A good rainy day read!

    A delightful book--though sad and enlightening at the same time. I have particular interest in the book--my life long friend lived on Guernsey for many years and now lives on Alderney. I have always been curious about life on the islands during and after the WWII years. I hope to visit my friend and these islands in the near future. I live in the USA. Anyway, the 'letters, telegrams' that told the story was unusal, but so easy to follow as they told a story and it flowed nicely as the story unfolded. A very good read!!

    A Great Book Group Read

    I like to read realistic fiction with a historical basis. This book gave information about the difficulties the people of the Channel Islands had to endure during the 5 year German occupation. I appreciated the strong character development and a solid sense of place, especially when the main character arrived on Guernsey Channel Island for an extended visit to write. The 30 something spinster novelist Juliet Ashton made a personal connection with many of Guernsey's residents by writing to them prior to her stay. Once she arrives on the island Juliet acquires much more than information about the residents' suffering during the war and how they carried on with their lives once liberated. I couldn't put the book down and appreciated the romantic plot with many sub plots that made the ...

    Interesting perspectives

    I am currently going to school for an English degree and I had to purchase this book to read for a group project. I found it cheapest on ebay so I purchased it from a seller on here. I like the fact that this novel consists of a collection of letters mainly surrounding the main character, Juliet, and the concepts of the Literary society that is the book's namesake. This gives an interesting perspective on the story. I also enjoyed the fact that it is a WWII era novel. I enjoy reading about stuff that is from that time or based in that time. What I didn't really like is the story becomes very cliche and predictable. The way the creation of the novel was approached made it seem like it wouldn't be the typical "love story." But all in all it was certainly worth the read.

    A Must Read

    I am currently living in Germany and the World War II has really come to life since I'm surrounded by it. It is very refreshing to hear accounts of the effects of the war on a small community. I didn't even know this place existed before I read the book. Now after reading The Guernsey Literary and Potato Pie Society, I have fallen in love with the place just as the main character did. It also shows a compassionate side to some of the German soldiers and the struggles that EVERYONE went through. If you'd like to add a dozen or more new friends to your life, read this book and take in the characters.

    The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

    This is another book that I had trouble putting down once I started reading it. At first I didn't think I would like the format in which the book is written--a series of letters from one character to another; but once I became comfortable with who the characters were and how they related to each other, I was hooked and had to keep reading. I enjoyed getting to know Juliet, Sydney, and the characters on the island. Having been raised by a mother who lived in England during WWII, I have heard many wartime stories about bombings and rationings. I do, however, feel that those stories of hardship from another time need to be heard by us today.
