One Major Flaw
You buy a complete photo etch set because it's......well, complete! It has barrels, masts, smokestack covers...etc. Of course what's a ship without railings and it has those too. Unfortunately like MOST Flyhawk instructions it doesn't tell how and where to place them. The only reference you have are the pictures on the box. You will have to find more pictures on line or in a book to try and figure out the placement of them and hope you have enough for what you want to do. Alternatively you can just buy the Aoshima Myoko railing set and use that. The point is you spent the money for a complete set, you shouldn't have to hunt around or goto another source for what you need! This is just laziness on their part as this is not the first Flyhawk kit that has this problem with the ... You buy a complete photo etch set because it's......well, complete! Flyhawk etch set - buying a Japanese Reference Book on Myoko Class cruisers afterwards - ESSENTIAL
This is a lovely super-detail set , however be warned ( 1 ) The Instructions are pretty poor - be warned ( 2 ) you MUST buy a decent photo-reference book with line-drawings - to work out where the etch goes - or you will struggle to fit the etch ( 3 ) There are NO 25mm AA gun gun barrels + etch provided in the set ( which for the price of the etch set , is pretty scandalous ) - I highly recommend you buy the INFINI 25mm AA gun aftermarket set which is superb and has hollow ended gun barrels Frankly , unless you have references to hand , I actually recommend you buy instead the 1/350 White Ensign Photo Etch IJN Takao ( ref Reference: PE 35100 ) Detail Set - which comes with excellent instructions that actually assist you - note the photo showing this etch set detailed below ( apologies for ... This fret contains the ships railings, the majority of which are sized to fit in their respective positions, with the bow railings shaped to fit easily onto the flared fo'c's'le. All the turrets get a lot of extra detail, with side ladders, aerial masts, turret top railings and a choice of open or closed sight windows. The ships aircraft, Dave, Alf, Pete and Jake, get new props and a full complement of struts. The ships radars get an overhaul with replacement etched parts for all types of radars and aerials, along with antenna spreaders. Both the 11m Ceremonial and motor boats get a new set of finely detailed fittings and there is a nice touch with the addition of extended boat booms, complete with Jacob ladders and ropes. The ships crane rigging is completely replaced with the superbly etched replacement on this sheet. The rest of the parts include inclined ladders, vent grilles, two type of vertical ladders, Sea boat boarding ladders and yardarm footropes. Finally there is a choice of using either Type 3 or Type 5 catapult mechanisms, for which research will be required to ascertain which type was used on which ship. The second fret of 290x175mm contains the different assemblies for the Type 3 and Type 5 catapults for the mechanisms mentioned above. The flight deck is provided with new turntables, rails, trolleys and cradles for each of the different types of aircraft. The ships boats have more details on this sheet, including new thwarts and gunwhales, oars, rudders, props and skegs, plus replacement cradles and davits. For the ship itself there are replacement gun towers, new mast platforms and supports, bridge windows, new turret side and rear plating, turret sliding doors, parts for single and twin 12.7cm guns, win and triple 25mm guns and completely new twin 13mm, single 25mm and single 0.5 machine guns. The kits main crane jib is replaced with a folded etched item along with new boats cranes, and various boat/accommodation davits/ladder and torpedo loading crane. If building the ship at rest with awnings fitted there is a selection of small/medium and large awning stations provided. Finally there is new quarterdeck plating fitted with antenna towers and smoke generators.

Weak instructions or none at all. Parts too finely etched and easily damaged. At times one wonders if anyone has ever been able to assemble some of this stuff in 1/350. Over all, it's adequate but it could be better. For the money, considering what has to be done to make the stuff, it should be better. At least drop a dime on a couple of sheets of paper and improve the instructions. Give the stuff to someone who's never put it together before and let that person write the instructions when he has successfully completed it. Don't always assume we know what you mean. To think that photo etched parts or the application of such can be intuitive is ludicrous. You'll never get a bad review for too many sheets of instructions. So many details to make Myoko-class as realistic as possible in 1/350
I read reviews that said the manual is complicated and it is difficult to understand. It might be that they have changed the manual or I understand it pretty well. The kit is of very good detail and quality. The only thing I am afraid of is how much time it would take to build)
