This book is the essential guide for serious and casual charm collectors everywhere. “Charms and Charm Bracelets The Complete Guide” is a hardback book published by Schiffer in 2005. The author, Joanne Schwartz, and photographer, Robert N. Schwartz have done a brilliant job of packing the book with charm bracelet history spanning the 19th century to present time. They also discuss the makers, styles, and current values, and included over 300 stunning color photographs of bracelets and charms. On the dust jacket inside front cover there is a brief biography of Joanne Schartz. The first paragraph reads: “Schwartz is an avid collector of antique and vintage jewelry. Her personal library includes more than 100 vintage jewelry catalogs, and she is a member of the Society of Jewelry ... This book is the essential guide for serious and casual charm collectors everywhere. “Charms and Charm Bracelets The Complete Guide” is a hardback book published by Schiffer in 2005. They also discuss the makers, styles, and current values, and included over 300 stunning color photographs of bracelets and charms. Her personal library includes more than 100 vintage jewelry catalogs, and she is a member of the Society of Jewelry Historians.” From her vast knowledge and library she has pulled together this comprehensive and entertaining guide that was my first “must have” jewelry reference, and still my favorite. Reading through the table of contents gives an overview of the wealth of information contained in the pages that follow. Part one examines the manufacuring processes of various vintage charms including the materials used, the manufacturing processes, and embellishments. Part two chronicles the history starting from the 1900s when chatelaines and watch fobs evolved into bracelets, up to the 1960s and beyond. Part three takes a look at special categories of charms such as stanhopes, hearts, travel souvenirs, and those with mechanical moving parts. And part four, my favorite, is the charm catalog, which is loaded with many more “drool over” photos from some premier charm collections. There are also several appendices in the back that help identify various makers and types of charms. The technical advisor for the book was Joan Munkacsi. She also provided many of the beautiful bracelet examples from her extensive personal collection to be used in the photographs throughout the book. Sadly Joan passed away last year, however her legacy lives on for charm collectors through her contributions to this book, and in the vintage charm ebay discussion group. I believe this book is a collectible in inself, equally suited for a coffee table specimen and a research guide. You’ll want to have a separate copy for research though because I assure you the pages will appear heavily used within a short time. It’s considered by many to be the charm collectors “Bible” and is a great resource for jewelry collectors everywhere.

I've been collecting charms for over half my life. I love 'em all - they create three dimentional journals of our lives. They tell stories. When you see this book (a masterpiece) & read it cover to cover, your appreciation of charms, their histories and values, will deepen tremendously. Its excellent information with outstanding photographs bring it all together & takes collecting to another level. Keep it out on your coffee table for all who visit to appreciate the true meanings & values of these incredible and precious tokens of love. ---Enjoy!I've been collecting charms for over half my life. Without a doubt, Charms and Charm Bracelets The Complete Guide is the quintessential reference book for charm collectors, and well worth the $39.95 retail price. It is 192 pages packed full of high quality pictures of vintage charms, charm bracelets, old ads and photos of people wearing charms. I was pleased to find several of my own charms in the book. The book goes into great detail on the history of each charm, sizes and markings. Yet it's cleverly written and easy to read. It is well organized by era and themes, and includes a great section on the history of charms. I've been lucky enough to have chatted with the Technical Advisor of this book on ebay's Jewelry Board, and she really knows her stuff. She once commented to the effect that the book prices are "real" prices, and I ... If you can only afford the money or space for one charm book this MUST be it, keep it close at hand for reference and enjoyment. Read it cover to cover till it's burned into the depths of your collecting consciousness - this is the BIBLE of charms. Every woman I know has a charm bracelet from their youth or has inherited a charm bracelet from a relative. Charm collecting is even more popular today than in the past -and we have been collecting charms from the time we crawled out of the primordial ooze and grabbed a hunk of amber or pretty stone for luck. eBay lists over 20,000 vintage charms and bracelets daily, truly the something for everyone category. This is an informative and enjoyable guide to charms and charm bracelets, lavishly illustrated with color photographs.If you can only afford the money or space for one charm book this MUST be it, keep it close at hand for reference and enjoyment. Charms overall.
There is no other book out there that is as good and thorough as this work by Joanne Schwartz. It has good pictures and each section is just perfect. If you love charms and want to learn about the history or just see pics it is a great read!
