Mary Harron (AMERICAN PSYCHO) transports New York to a pre-feminist, late 1960s, Andy Warhol art scene in this stylistically inflammatory flick that harkens back to such films as BORN IN FLAMES. Lili Taylor plays the angry Valerie Solanas with a vengeance that just won't quit. Solanas is mad. She's a manic spitfire, has hell to raise, and is armed with the SCUM MANIFESTO. Encouraged by Warhol's queerly noncommittal attitude, Solanas is convinced he will produce her play UP YOUR ASS. Between writing and turning tricks at the Chelsea Hotel, she meets Maurice Girodias, famous publisher of writers like William S. Burroughs, Jean Genet and Pauline Reage. Intrigued by her subversive quality, he signs a contract with her for the completion of two novels. When Solanas realizes she's signed the rights over to Girodias, she begins to unravel and sets out on a paranoid mission to stop him and Warhol from controlling her life.Harron's film is a manifesto. Stylistically adventurous, this indie romp is a smart and sassy feminist critique of Andy Warhol's Factory scene. Unlike other films that glamorize it (THE DOORS, BASQUIAT), I SHOT ANDY WARHOL exposes the subtle misogyny that is just barely veiled under all the glamor.

Warhol through a feminist lens-- unkind and revealing
I have heard Lou Reed of the Velvet Underground lambast this film as sensationalist and irresponsible-- indeed, how can one paint a sympathetic portrait of a woman who tried to kill a man? Of course Reed has often had a bone to pick with strong women in his circle (Nico, anyone? She sings much better thatn you, Lou, let her lead the band.) And with all of the tired and slavishly worshipful films coming out that glorify Warhol's Factory scene, this is the only one that dares to assert that many of the artists involved with that hallowed movement simply did not like people, preferring ideas, style, drugs and poses to actual human contact. The Factory scene as typified by Warhol himself is condemned as particularly hateful towards women. This is where our "protagonist", Valerie Solanas (she ... Brilliantly portrayed by the always underappreciated Lily Taylor, Solanas puts a feminist jack boot in the face of Warhol's affectations and preference for femininity over womanhood. When Solanas says to trannie scenester Candy Darling (another awesome performance by, can you believe it, Steven Dorff)that Andy keeps him/her around precisely because he hates women, we see director Mary Harron's revisionist pop art history at play. It is a revision that, in the eyes of this art fan, is very welcome. A great film, simply put.

I Shot Andy Warhol ( DVD, 2001)
I purchased this product because it was recommended to me by a Professor at UCLA's Theatre, Film and Television( TFT) Film School. The recommendation was for me to study the Director Mary Harron, an underrated and extremely talented Director. Herron's Avant-Garde film did not disappoint. Herron takes artistic risks, to keep her Director's Vision focused and puts it on the Silver Screen for audiences.I purchased this product because it was recommended to me by a Professor at UCLA's Theatre, Film and Television( TFT) Film School. The recommendation was for me to study the Director Mary Harron, an underrated and extremely talented Director. Herron's Avant-Garde film did not disappoint. Herron takes artistic risks, to keep her Director's Vision focused and puts it on the Silver Screen for audiences.
