À propos de ce produit

Product Information

Everyone knows the hits--"Hanky Panky," "Mony Mony," "I Think We're Alone Now," "Crimson and Clover," "Crystal Blue Persuasion." They are nuggets of rock and pop history. However, few know the unlikely story of how these hits came to be.. Tommy James was discovered in 1966 at the age of nineteen, and was pursued by every record mogul in New York until, inexplicably, every offer but one quickly disappeared. James soon found himself in the office of Morris Levy at Roulette Records, where he was handed a pen and ominously promised "one helluva ride." Morris Levy, the legendary "godfather" of the music business, needed some hits and Tommy would provide them.. Me, the Mob, and the Music tells the intimate story of the relationship between the bright-eyed, sweet-faced blonde musician from the heartland and the big, bombastic, brutal bully from the Bronx, who hustled, cheated, and swindled his way to the top of the music industry. It is also the story of this swaggering, wildly creative era of rock 'n' roll when payola and the strong arm tactics of the mob were the norm, and the hits kept coming..

Reviews
"Tommy James's story is one of the most interesting of any of the 1960s rockers. . . . His story reads like a music-industry version of 'Goodfellas.'"--Denver Post, "The songwriter shows how bare-knuckled mafia operators made money from rock-and-roll's turbulent adolescence."-- The Washington Post, "Tommy James' rock & roll education cost him millions, but at least we got this entertaining memoir."-- Rolling Stone, "The songwriter shows how bare-knuckled mafia operators made money from rock-and-roll's turbulent adolescence."--The Washington Post, “A boisterous memoir . . . It’s high time that [Tommy James] had a book to himself. Janet Maslin, The New York Times, "A boisterous memoir . . . • Lines Never Drag In James' Fine Auto-Bio

Ever since I bought the Crimson & Clover 45rpm in 1969, I've had a fascination with Tommy James. One of the first LPs I ever owned was the Best of TJ & the Shondells, and I played it relentessly. Even after the big hits stopped, I bought the 45s and wondered why they didn't go further up the charts. It seemed to me that Tommy James simply could not make a bad record. The worst he could do was good, and most of them were great. I never knew much about him. There was little coverage in our newspapers of pop music, and magazines like Rolling Stone & Cream ignored anything that wasn't "hip". All of that brings me to this, the only book I know of about the life and times of Tommy James. From my admittedly biased point of view, it was a real find. Enjoyable from cover to cover, it is an ...

  • A great look into an interesting life

It would appear as if Tommy James has led the great American life. The rock-n-roll child prodigy that became an overnight success, moved to the big city, signed a big record contract and cranked out one big multi-million seller after the other, becoming filthy rich in the process. I did say APPEAR. That big record contract? Tommy unknowingly signed it with the Italian mob at Roulette Records (headed by the legendary and infamous Morris Levy). That filty rich part? It didn't happen as Levy and the mob ran off with his money. You can imagine what happened along way, and the characters that shaped his interesting life. The book is an easy read, as if you're having a dialouge with TJ himself. He walks (and runs) you straight through his life showing all things beautiful and disgusting ...

  • MUST READ BOOK FOR ANY FAN OF SIXTIES ROCK

Great look into the music business of the 1960s and 70s. Very well-written book. Tommy James is very under-rated as an artist and this book tells all about how many wonderful songs he's written as part of the "fabric and soundtrack of our lives." How many people's favorite song is "Crimson and Clover"? Who has NOT danced crazily to "Mony Mony"? I am so glad he is still going strong and hope I have the opportunity to see him live.

  • If you like 60's music, try it, you'll like it.

Not the typical musician's memoir. The fact that the Genovese crime family secretly ran Roulette records gives it a whole new dimension. Tommy James worked directly for Morris Levy who also owned the jazz club Birdland and the Roulette Room. It was very interesting watching the dynamic between them. If Tommy had been with any other label, he would have probably been a one hit wonder. Instead, he had 23 gold singles and 9 gold and platinum albums. He had free rein with Levy, even though he was cheated out of millions of dollars in royalties. They have been working on a movie based on the book. I'm looking forward to seeing it.

After receiving my book, I decided to read a chapter or three on Sunday morning.... Before I realized it, Sunday evening had arrived as I finished the last chapter. Yeah!, it's that good! .........Paul
