Reading about a legend
A year or so ago, my son checked this book out from the local library and we marveled over the John Allen story till the book had to go back. I couldn't forget so vivid a story. My interest and many questions remained - I needed to see the book again - I wanted to own it. Turns out I'm not the only one. It is out of print at Kalmbach and they've no plans to reprint. I finally found a copy on ebay and bacame a successful bidder. The John Allen story is amazing and the book tells it well. It covers the early planning and conceptualizing, the construction and the redesign extensively. John set a new standard of how to model a railroad, how to tell stories with it, how to transport us so completely into that miniature world. He brought his considerable artistic, craft and photographic talent ... We are fortunate that his life circumstances made it possible for him to bring the G&D to us and we're puzzled that the G&D left us in so dramatic a fashion like a sand castle. Many of today's modelers have taken John's views and concepts to new levels. I know they would give him credit for their being able to do that. I'm pleased that the book, a paperback, is in such nice condition, way better than the library copy. I'd advise anyone bidding on the book to pay careful attention to the condition. I'll take special care of this copy till my sons decide to put it back on ebay after I've gone to the great model railroad beyond.

Model Railroading With John Allen
An excellent book by one of the true pioneers in Model Railroading. When I began my model railroad experience in the fifties, John Allen was writing the occasional article in the Model Railroad press and building his model "empire". Pictures of his work were used in the Varney advertisements in model railroad magazines which had me and my friends enchanted by his wonderfully detailed work. I owned this book but it was destroyed in the 2006 floods in upstate New York. I desperately wanted a replacement copy and finally found a copy. Why this book has not been reprinted is beyond my understanding - I believe it would sell very well.An excellent book by one of the true pioneers in Model Railroading. Great book, excellent condition
Used book but almost like new. Contains photos of Allen's wonderful and creative model railroading scenery and many hand-built freight cars from the 1950s. Every scale modeler should see these photos. If only I had the time and space to do my own!

The all time ultimate model railroad
As an 11 year old boy who was crazy about model trains and living 3 miles away in Pacific Grove I shall always bless my mother who arranged for my visit to this incredible model railroad in 1961. My memory of the hour visitation is strong and vivid. What a great memory of a warm and pleasant gentleman!!
