Divine Divinity is a massive role-playing game in the tradition of Diablo, Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale set in the fantasy world of Rivellon, where the Lord of Chaos is spreading his evil dominion. Containing more than 20,000 screens, 150 non-player characters, and 100 types of monsters, the adventure is played from an isometric perspective. Players create their character (male or female) from three professions, warrior, wizard or survivor (thief or cutthroat), with standard RPG traits and statistics in vitality, mana, strength, agility, intelligence, and constitution. Characters feature a total of 480 skill levels -- 96 skills of five levels each.<br><br>Quest-based gameplay features inventory management, interaction with objects, equipment (belts, gloves, rings, amulets, and more) that changes the appearance of the character when worn, trading, conversing with NPCs, and combat. Each character type has a special move, sneaking, swirl attack, and teleportation (survivor, warrior, and wizard respectively), as well as offensive, defensive, damage, armor, resistance, reputation, and weight restraint ratings.<br><br>Skill sets are divided into "Ways" and associated with "Paths" for each type of character, which determines the style of play. Survivors can take the path of the thief, lore, or talents, warriors follow the path of specialist, ranger, warrior's lore or gods, and wizards choose from powers of matter, body and spirit, elemental powers, or summoning. Although designed for 3D acceleration, Divine Divinity also offers a software mode, as well as multiple solutions to increase game speed.

Solid game, somewhat buggy
I first learned abput this game when I saw that it was near the list of top CRPGs on one of my favorite review websites. I figured that it would be able to provide me a few thrills for a low price. After playing through it, I have to say that there are more than just a few thrills. The game plays like a mix of Diablo-esque combat and Ultima's quest options.There are only three classes: the warrior, the mage, and the survivor(basically the thief). However, each class has a male and a female version, which have slightly different starting stats and can play out in different ways from their counterparts.From the get-go, the quests in the game are anything but repetative. Dying in the game is a pain, as your character just lays there until you press Esc to go back to the load menu.Saving often ... The game would crash about 3 times an hour. Overall, an exceptional game, but to get the most enjoyment out of it, you may have to play it on something other than Window's xp.

Divine Divinity - A stellar Oblivion-esque RPG.
As a fan of the Elder Scrolls series, when I first heard about this title, I was already sold. In Divine Divinity, you play as Warrior, Survivor, or a Mage. While simple sounding, it's far more in depth than that. Put simply, regardless of whatever class you choose, no skills are restricted to you. Can't pick a lock? Teach yourself how with a Skill Point. Melee enemies killing you? Teach yourself to use a shield and sword along with your magic. In this way, whatever challenge you face, you can tackle it a certain way if you have the ability. Visually, Divinity looks almost exactly like Diablo 2, so if you can run Diablo 2 without a hitch, you're fine. Gameplay-wise, you can get into any house that you physically can, weapons are mapped to the left mouse, and spells are on a hotbar. Also, ... At around 9.99 for a retail copy, if you love RPGs like Fallout, Mass Effect, Oblivion, and Deus Ex, buy a copy of this game.

one of the best RPGs
I'm almost tempted to believe that Divine Divinity was divinely inspired. This is probably one of the more addictive and fun single person RPG's available. Period. As a D&D player and Game Master for several years, I highly recommend Divine Divinity to anyone that wants the same kind of "feel" as tabletop games. Although there are only three character types (Fighter, Mage, and "Survivor" [or "Thief" if you prefer]) you can choose to be either a female character or a male character, making six choices altogether. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. Once you have this simple decision made, you are thrust into a vast world that you have to find out about before you can solve all the possible quests. I have a list of over 27 pages of quests and sub-quests so far, and I may not ... I'm almost tempted to believe that Divine Divinity was divinely inspired. This is probably one of the more addictive and fun single person RPG's available. Period. The graphics are great, although a little resource intensive. The game recommends a 450mhz computer with 128MB of RAM, (256 is "recommended"), a DirectX 8 compliant video card with at least 8MB of memory, an 800x600 monitor, and a few other features, as well as the most important item - 2.5 GIGS of free Hard Drive space. I suspect you should at least think about doubling =all= of that. But it's worth it. I've played for about 200 hours of game time now, and still haven't found everything I need to complete some of the quests. I find my knowledge of RPG's invaluable. I can't wait until I get to the end - and I have no idea where that is. People, this game hardly got anywhere near the advertising that it deserved. Most people are discovering it by word of mouth. And this review is here to help you decide to try it. If you are into computer RPG's at all, I think it's worth buying.

The game somehow slipped under the radar among so many three star titles, but this one is five all the way with a well placed story, plot driven characters, well balanced magic system, and the ability to really shape your own destiny in the game, (unlike those other games that "promise" you this ability but never actually deliver on the goods). Bottom line: If your looking for that rare rpg experience, and have enjoyed titles such as Baldur's gate, Fallout, Oblivion, or Diablo 2, then pick up this title.
