It was only fitting that the ultimate Southern rock institution, Lynyrd Skynyrd - certainly one of the more tragic stories in rock & roll history - should be one of the first bands to benefit from a comprehensive box set. Following the format of the highly successful Led Zeppelin box set, this three-disc, 47-song anthology provides a near-perfect career retrospective, complete with a carefully researched booklet with meticulous historical essays and rare photos for the new and rabid fan alike. The latter will probably be most interested in disc one, which features a number of early demos dating back as early as 1970 and not featured in prior collections, as well as an embryonic demo of "Freebird" minus it's extended-jam coda. The nine-minute version from the band's milestone debut, Pronounced is also featured here, of course, as is most of the material from the group's next album, Second Helping, generally regarded as their career peak. Disc two alone could serve as a greatest-hits set, as classic after classic is rattled off in mind-blowing succession. And even when the creative fires finally begin to wane somewhat as the set approaches the Nuthin' Fancy and Gimme Back My Bullets material (recorded at a time when the band was plagued by overwork and escalating drug abuse), the set wisely offers alternate versions and live renditions to keep things interesting. The first half of disc three alternates never-before-heard concert performances with other, equally inspired live versions. It's second half is dominated by the unintentional swan song Street Survivors. Released only three days before the fateful plane crash, the album saw a re-energized Skynyrd achieving a new level of maturity, power, and purpose. Although most box sets tend to be a bit too much for the casual fan to swallow, this one feels just right.

A must have for the die-hard Leh-nerd Skin-herd fan
Lynyrd Skynyrd was a pioneer in Country Rock n Roll, not just Southern Rock. This box set is a true must for die hard Skynyrd fans, as it contains some very fine demos, unreleased songs and some old favorites. The demo version of "Free Bird" and "Gimme Three Steps" should have been the released versions, as they are free of clutter, and as pure as music can get. They, along with "He's Alive" demonstrate the power of Van Zandt's vocals, and the harmonious blend of instruments the band was known for, until that fateful day in 1977. "Junkie" is reminiscent of Hendrix, and "Mr. Banker" is a great folksy blues song that would please even Les Paul. My personal favorite song for any Pig Pickin' is on this set, called "Down South Jukin." Truly, an excellent arrangement and selection of songs, ... Incredible comprehensive career overview of the original band.
Rarities,outtakes,live versions & A great full color booklet make this boxed set a gold mine for hardcore Skynyrd fans....I love the old material off the 1st & 2nd albums.

Skynyrd is one of my all-time favorite Southern Rock bands and this boxed set really gives you a lot for your money. It represents each of the original studio releases from "Pronounced" to "Street Survivors" and everything good in between. It goes even farther than most cool sets and includes over a dozen studio outtakes and alternate (lyrics and musically) tracks of some of the bands most popular and best songs. If you like the band and want something cool to add to your collection this would be a great set to get.Skynyrd is one of my all-time favorite Southern Rock bands and this boxed set really gives you a lot for your money. Best packaging job I have seen YET! Wow. Yes, it was that good, and still sealed in great shape. Plays well too, but expected that when I saw how it arrived. Nice job, everyone.
