Fine Running Machine
"Sharky's Machine" is clearly a Burt Reynolds vehicle designed to allow the star room to strut his talents and this is why I bought it- he is enjoyable to watch. He spray-paints the machine, the film plot, with colors from other films and other styles, offering a variety of moods within a nourish story. Made in 1981 at 119 minutes (lengthy for the time period), the film did well, with box office grosses at $37,800,000. It had a lot going for it: Burt Reynolds actor and director, a solid one-two punch; a William Diel novel adaptation, and the south land of Atlanta Georgia, at this time, a land of opportunity for film production out of Hollywood. Reynolds' Tom Sharky falling in love with Rachel Ward's Dominoe the hooker-with-a-heart-of-gold is here echoed as it was in "Hustle" when he ... Reynolds' Tom Sharky falling in love with Rachel Ward's Dominoe the hooker-with-a-heart-of-gold is here echoed as it was in "Hustle" when he played opposite Catherine Deneuve, and that film also had a corrupt politician at its core, but with downbeat ending not the Hollywood happiness in "Sharky's Machine". What I like most about it is the great way Reynolds has with his actors and his own off-handed way of directing himself. But on the flip side he tends to ‘show’ so much of the stuff that we wish for a little more depth at times- a good director can always direct others better than himself. Reynolds wants to exhibit the inner workings of a hardened policemen falling in love, but the police-story plot, flavored with noir element, and Reynolds ability at cinematic development tends to slick over the dynamics of the relationships. We come to learn something about some of the men and this leads us to reason why they are working towards their pensions in vice, instead of fighting real crime- this element of the film seems sketchy under Reynolds' off-handed direction and performance. There is always uniqueness to a Reynolds film. He likes to hire stars, either character actors or others and then allow them to improvise, sometimes with varying results. With his crew in "Sharky's Machine" he gets some fine moments, and sometimes some overblown grandstanding but always a sense of ensemble and good-natured-ness. With Reynolds as auteur it works. Reynolds, the actor/auteur always seems to be smirking at himself and the viewer as if to say it’s all fake, but good fun. Great line: In the scene with Victor when Sharky throws down the gauntlet "You're walkin' all over people like you own 'em ,and you wanna know the worst part? You're from out of state." This seems to be the greatest insult the officer can throw at a criminal. Reynolds made the film in Atlanta at his career point have shot himself reading the phone book and would have surely targeted and demographic. The film did mark the appearance of Rachel Ward who was nominated as New Star of the Year in 1981 by the Golden Globe. Reynolds has always had presence and star power and has chosen to make films close to home, Georgia. Unfortunately the DVD doesn’t contain any commentary or making-of features, which is a shame. Maybe the next generation will have them. The movie is still a lot of fun and both Reynolds and Ward are great-looking actors in their prime.

He gets sent down to Vice, the most loathed position available. In the Vice Division, Lt. Friscoe in the boss. Sharky and his new found partners bust a local prostitute and she gives information which opens the door to a ring of very expensive prostitutes. One of the women is named Dominoe, who charges $1,000 per night. Sharky and his partners begin a surveillance on her very expensive apartment and soon discover that one of her clients is a Mr. Hotchkins. He is not only married, but is currently a candidate for governor. Sharky and his group are nicknamed Sharky's Machine by Lt. Friscoe. One day while watching ... The next morning, Dominoe's door bell rings, and when she goes to answer it, a blast in the face from a double-barrel shotgun kills her. Victor's brother , Billy Score, a drug addict, is the killer. He answers to Victor, as does Hotchkins, who because of his love for Dominoe is Victor's stooge. He is being blackmailed by Victor and is using his influence in Victor's behalf. All of a sudden, Dominoe shows up. It seems that her friend Tiffany was house sitting, and killed by accident. Not wanting anyone to find out, Sharky and his group move Dominoe to a safe house and Sharky pays a visit to Victor. He lets him know that Dominoe is alive and that he is going to take him down. Sharky is taken prisoner by another cop, the same dirty cop who blew his stakeout and almost got him killed, Smiley. He tortures Sharky until Sharky kills him. Several of Sharky's partners are killed by dirty cops and hired killers, but Sharky survives and with Domino shows up at Hatkins's political rally. Believing that Dominoe is dead, Hotchkins is in considerable shock. He is placed under arrest. In an agitated state, Billy Score shoots and kills Victor. Sharky and his team take him down in a spectacular shootout in an Atlanta highrise where Sharky shoots him and he goes out a window to the ground 700 feet below. Sharky and Dominoe are now together.

Reynolds, Ward, at their best. Awesome bad guy. Great casting.
I'm from Atlanta and loved this movie since I saw it back when it first came out (I was 18 at the time). Reynolds is a cop and does a great job. It's a serious role and he doesn't disappoint. Rachel Ward is the best looking I've ever seen her in this movie, too. She nails her role, showing her acting skills while being drop-dead gorgeous. The villain is creepy as he_ _! He does an incredible job with his role as the bad guy. The supporting characters are all decent actors and were well cast for the movie. The end is awesome, too. SPOILER ALERT: A fall from the Peachtree Plaza Hotel in Atlanta. Awesome stunt and end to the movie. I just had to own the DVD and can't believe I waited so long to buy it. My review overall: 9.5. An 80s noir film w Burt Reynolds as an Atlanta cop fighting the bureaucracy, the local crime lord, politicians on the take, and Henry Silva, as a psychotic hit man. The film begins w Reynolds, as Sharkey, as part of a narcotics bust that goes awry, and Reynolds gets demoted from narcotics to vice for the bad result. Once there, Sharkey gets a new assignment, surveilling the local vice criminals, and we get to see Sharkey's skill set emerge as he begins building working relationships w the other cops in vice and support. We get to see how they work together to target the local crime lord, and set up to build their case against him. We get bosses trying to control the scope of Sharkey's work, we get the crime lord's reach trying to keep Sharkey's team from interfering w their business ... We get shoot outs, tension build ups, misdirections, and we get stuntman Dar Robinson doing one of his world-famous falls from an Atlanta high rise, as part of the action We get such pros as Brian Keith, Charles Durning, Bernie Casey, Richard Libertini and John Fiedler creating the interesting characters who make up Sharkey's Machine, and make this an interesting film to watch. Enjoy!

This is an old movie when Burt Reybolds still had the Star appeal and was in shape enough to pull this off. But for it's day (1980- 81) it worked. The surrounding cast is what makes this best (Charles Durning, Brian Keith and former 49'r/LA Rams NFL'r Bernie Casey) make up (Reynold's) Det., Sharkey's Machine squad. This is a typical good guy bad guy cop movie and is a guy movie. Rachel Ward is the $1K a night call girl wanting to go straight from her pimp and of course Sharkey is there and saves her from death then hides her. Then the chase is on and some good fight scenes take place. Did I mention it's a guy movie so Rachel Ward keeps your interest! Reynolds co-directed this and the dialog (although corny at times) is good and the gore is left to a minimum. If this was made today ... About everyone in the world has seen the amazing stunt at the end of the movie but if you have not seen it then I won't give it away. Overall, if you like good cop bad guy movies this is for you. I've seen it at least 30 tiems and will watch it again and again when I'm in the mood for some humor and violence. Enjoy it if you order it!
