À propos de ce produit

Product Information

"It's a wonderful, splendid book--a book that should be read by every American, student or otherwise, who wants to understand his country, its true history, and its hope for the future." --Howard Fast, author of Spartacus and The Immigrants "[It] should be required reading." --Eric Foner, New York Times Book Review Library Journal calls Howard Zinn's iconic A People's History of the United States "a brilliant and moving history of the American people from the point of view of those...whose plight has been largely omitted from most histories." Packed with vivid details and telling quotations, Zinn's award-winning classic continues to revolutionize the way American history is taught and remembered. Frequent appearances in popular media such as The Sopranos, The Simpsons, Good Will Hunting, and the History Channel documentary The People Speak testify to Zinn's ability to bridge the generation gap with enduring insights into the birth, development, and destiny of the nation.

Reviews
"[A People's History of the United States is] one of the most important books I have ever read in a long life of reading...It's a wonderful, splendid book--a book that should be read by every American, student or otherwise, who wants to understand his country, its true history, and its hope for the future." -- Howard Fast "Professor Zinn writes with an enthusiasm rarely encountered in the leaden prose of academic history, and his text is studded with telling quotations from labor leaders, war resisters and fugitive slaves. . . . [It] should be required reading." -- Eric Foner, New York Times Book Review "Howard Zinn's work literally changed the conscience of a generation. And the series of 'people's histories' derived from this great work have provided new understanding of who we are and what we should aspire to be." -- Noam Chomsky "A brilliant and moving history of the American people." -- Library Journal "A brilliantly written story about the U.S. through the lives of those too often overlooked." -- Time magazine, [A People's History of the United States is] one of the most important books I have ever read in a long life of reading...It's a wonderful, splendid book--a book that should be read by every American, student or otherwise, who wants to understand his country, its true history, and its hope for the future.

Avis les plus pertinents

  • The title presents with a sweeping ambition and delivers a narrative of a vital yet mostly neglected history

Zinn provides material that should have been included in a public school education in the United States, but was omitted possibly for various message control reasons. After digesting the information presented so effectively in this book, it becomes easier to identify hypocritical actions of those in power regardless of political affiliation.

  • The Flip-Side

Having only read halfway into the book, I feel it fits to only review that far. Thus far, the book has focused nicely on the "little people" of America's history. Those oppressed, massacred, and other things of that sort. Zinn writes with an incredible predjudice AGAINST those typically held in esteem in history, but this bias is the basis of the book and its view of American history. TO those who argue that Zinn's extreme revisionism is a detriment to "historical fact." History is all about facts, the choice of which side to focus on, however, is what deems whether its "revisionist propaganda" or not. Zinn chooses to focus on the typically ignored facts. Sure, Columbus dicovered the new world, but he did ALSO massacre the natives. Zinn plays up the latter. So far, this book, whether ...

  • The most accurate, well documented U.S.History book written.

Simply the finest, best documented U.S. History text ever written. Students absolutely need to refer to this text in order to balance the conventional "to the victor goes the spoils" and the right to write history. Hearing from women, children, slaves, workers, people of color, and Indigenous peoples, those who never make it past a blip on the pages of conventional history texts. It offers students, and interested adults, the perspective of those who awoke, worked, slept, day after day within the system veiled under the politics and wars of schoolhouse history books. Students walk away with a broader perspective and an invitation to follow Zinn's lead and research the reality left between the pages of conventional curriculum.

  • Unbiased history of the United States

This is the text every high school student should read!

  • Great

I bought this text for a course I am doing in College. I love the way it's written. So far I have not encountered anything that I can categorize as 'dislike'. The entire experience from ordering to receiving was excellent. I would not hesitate to make another purchase and definitely would recommend this to others at school. Keep up the good work. Thanks !
