See E.B. Sledge's story in the HBO miniseries The Pacific China Marine is the extraordinary sequel to E.B. Sledge's memoir, With the Old Breed, which remains the most powerful and moving account of the U.S. Marines in World War II. Sledge continues his story where With the Old Breed left off and recounts the compelling conclusion of his Marine career. After Japan's surrender in 1945, Sledge and his company were sent to China to maintain order and to calm the seething cauldron of political and ideological unrest created by opposing factions. His regiment was the first Marine unit to return to the ancient city of Peiping (now Beijing) where they witnessed the last of old China and the rise of the Communist state. Sledge also recounts the difficulty of returning to his hometown of Mobile, Alabama, and resuming civilian life while haunted by shadows of close combat. Through the discipline of writing and the study of biology, he shows how he came to terms with the terrifying memories that had plagued him for years. Poignant and compelling, China Marine provides a frank depiction of the real costs of war, emotional and psychological as well as physical, and reveals the enduring bond that develops between men who face the horrors of war.

    Islands of the Damned

    If you like personal wars stories then this is it. Written by R.V. Burgin and his story of his fight in the Pacific, takes place on an Island that really no one has heard of. Why? R.V. Burgin gives his opinion on this and it makes since, but the battle was more costly than the bigger island wars and just as important, I enjoyed his story telling and made me feel like i knew him, He gives a brief but filling look at his personal life so you actually get to know him rather just thrown into a war with no idea who you are reading about, he covers the 4 differant Islands and landings with enough detail to make you feel you are there, he doesnt go over board or fill in the blanks with elaborate tales, it is precise and grippin.     Northern China recollections by a U.S. marine in post-WW II China.

    China Marine captures a short but critical period in northern China in the aftermath of WWII when Peiping (Beijing, now) was not yet overrun by the Chinese Communists. Sledge's description of many factions at work provides a different approach not eschewed by academics. His efforts to learn spoken Chinese and his several deep friendships there provide a sense of the changing society as well as the traditional society. U.S. Marines had a half-century of different levels of service in China. Without the ambitions of Great Britain, Russia or Japan, I believe their insights to be less colonial in nature and more open to the experience of China itself.     The Genesis of combat and self worth analysis.

    One must first read Mr. Sledges' initial book. This book is a continuation of his service. It is invaluable to all Americans' that either served or have not served. Never, and I mean never have I read an account of war that was so personal.     Continuation of a real marine's saga, it is educational, entertaining and historic. Like With The Old Breed, it is a must read for understanding the forces of WWII era.

    A Finish to a Good Story

    This is a conclusion to "With the Old Breed" by the same author. This author writes with an easy believable style. A must for those that his first book. I highly recommend it.
