  • An excellent film with an astounding performance by Geraldine Page!

Geraldine Page is mesmerizing in her Oscar-winning role as an elderly widow, living with her son and daughter-in-law, who wants nothing more than to venture back to house she was born in one last time. Carrie Watts (Geraldine Page) waits each month for her assistance check to arrive so that she can hide it and use the money to travel to the town of her birth (Bountiful, Texas) once more before she dies. Her son, Ludie (John Heard), is concerned about her traveling alone because of a heart condition and daughter-in-law, Jessie Mae (Carlin Glynn), doesn’t want to “waste” the money. One fateful day, Carrie evades them both and manages to board a bus where she meets a fellow traveler (Rebecca De Mornay) and they share life stories along the way. Unbeknownst to Carrie is that Ludie has ...

  • Meaningful story of the longing of elderly

A lovely story acted superbly. Every family should see this film that clearly reveals the longing of the elderly to remember and return to their youth or simpler years of life. Also deals with the loss of independence that many senior citizens face when they cannot live independently and must adapt to the often unwelcome intrusion into the lives of adult children they bore.

  • The Old House Through Her Eyes

I truly like, probably love, this film, find it precious, the acting excellent, the story very true to life in every character. I wish she did not have to go back to what she fled from, but life is just not able to go foreward backwards. Yet in the end she did actually get to feel the dirt once more, and I understand the need in such an unforgettable treasure. She did keep her check for her own from now on, and have her fate free most of the time to sing all she wanted from now on too....so she did accomplish quite a lot by her trip afterall. I , like her, could just picture the old house all painted and cant see why it cant still be so and would love to move into it myself all fixed up, new paint smell, fresh curtains blowing in the breeze, red petunias around the front...but ...

  • THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME

Geraldine Page won an Oscar for her role in The Trip to Bountiful. An elderly woman(Page) reflects on life, love and family as she tries to return to her hometown one last time before she dies. Her hometown is almost gone from the map but her childhood house remains. She chases shadows and memories and comes to terms with her life and the fact that she will soon die. Bountiful is rural and she ventures by bus to see her home one more time. On her trip with a fellow passenger (who helped her escape from her son and daughter-n-law, who are trying to stop her) she tells the story of her one true love. This moment in cinema history is one of the saddest ever. Life marches on and before you know it, the end of the road and your journey is reached. You have found Bountiful and all it's glory.
