Konami's strategic fantasy series, which began on the original PlayStation in 1995, marks its tenth anniversary with an all-new adventure on an unfamiliar continent in Suikoden V. The once-peaceful land of Falena has been stricken with civil strife and uncertainty. To put an end to the unrest, the ruling queen has turned to the power of the kingdom's Sun Rune, an act that involves more than she bargained for. Players assume the role of Falena's prince, who agrees to investigate the mysterious aura of the Sun Rune and uncover its true nature. Thus begins a quest that involves forming a six-character party from a pool of more than 60 playable heroes and engaging in epic battles against a wide assortment of armies and creatures. <br><br>While in battle, the party will be able to use over 20 formations to exploit enemy weaknesses. Characters will also acquire new skills, weapon upgrades, and ability-enhancing equipment as the game progresses. A secondary objective is to find the 108 Stars of Destiny, heroes scattered throughout the world, to help create a home base of operations. Konami estimates Suikoden V to be its largest game in the series to date, with real-time battles involving hundreds of troops, cinematic cut-scenes complete with spoken dialogue, multiple endings, surprising plot developments, and a branching storyline. Players will visit bustling towns, delve into dungeons, and explore the serene 3D world from an angled overhead perspective.

Best PS2 RPG!
With amazing graphics and a compelling story this game is almost Impossible not to love. You play as a prince who has been ousted from his Kingdom because of a military coup. You must gather together 108 different characters (all of which bring something to your follow) in order to build an army so that you can retake your homeland.

A complex and deep JRPG
Many of the classic elements of JRPGs are apparent in Suikoden V but there are so many characters with actual motivations beyond just being good and bad guys. I'm only a few hours in to the game and I've really enjoyed the story, the voice acting is also pretty good which can really make or break some games for me. The combat is varied and engaging. The graphics are colorful and well done.

Suikoden V "Back to the series"
To tell the truth, I lost hope in ever playing a good Suikoden again, after Suikoden 4. Suikoden 1 and 2 were amazing games. Then came along 3, which wasn't bad, but I didn't get the Suikoden feeling with 3. I couldn't even finish playing it. I played till about 75% of the game , then just stopped. After that, I had high hopes for Suikoden 4. Rune of Punishment and all that. But sadly, it was such an average game with nothing to flaunt. It definitely lost the Suikoden feeling totally. So, when I heard about Suikoden 5, I didn't pay much attention to it. I was more interested in my other favourite RPG series such as Shadow Hearts and Final Fantasy. Man, was I in for a surprise!! Graphics: The graphics is this game is nothing short of amazing. It's such a huge improvement over Suikoden 4. ... From the beginning, I was intrigued by the characters. Overall, the graphics in Suikoden won't be disappointing to anybody. It's beautiful and well-designed. Gameplay: We're back to Suikoden 1 and 2 again folks:) 6 characters in battle. Various formations. I'm so so glad they did this. I think they finally realized not to change anything that's not broken. They changed too much with Suikoden 3 and 4, instead of improving Suikoden 1 and 2 style. The gameplay in this game is very simple, in my opinion. But that's the beauty of it. Sound: Extremely breathtaking musics can be found throughout the game. I enjoyed every one of them. The battle musics, town musics, etc etc. They are all nice to hear. Overall: Suikoden fans or not, get this game now!! You won't regret it. RPGs like this don't come along all the time. You should play it and cherish the experience. You'll remember this game for many years to come.

Horrible start, but then it gets better.
This review is from the point of view of someone that played, and enjoyed Suikoden 1, 2 and 3. I decided to buy the game after hearing good things about the story and battles. First off the storyline, while decent, has an awful beginning. The pacing of the story is just terrible, the battles take minimal effort, and the "castle town" you're stuck wandering around is awful. Thankfully this all improves later, and you'll also start seeing a lot less cut scenes, which means less horrid voice acting as well. However, once it gets going you'll discover a political plot with all the depth and betrayal of the previous Suikodens. I don't like to spoil story details personally, but the plot follows the same basic formula as the first two Suikodens. Game play is probably the game's best feature, ... The original Suikoden 1 and 2 battle system (6 character party included) has been expanded with different formations, and allows you to use 3 runes on each character like Suikoden 3. This sounds great at first, until you realize the battle system wasn't originally designed for that at all, leading to old runes+combinations being incredibly cheap. Tactical combat seems a bit Dynasty Tactics 2 like. Certain units have advantages over others with the usual rock paper scissors system. These like the rest of the game, are incredibly easy, once you know what you're doing. The music isn't worth mentioning much, the games best music is old remixes from Suikoden 1. It isn't necessarily horrid music, that award goes to Suikoden 3, but it's not very good music either. Now onto graphics, the opening movie you see every time you start the game is pretty ugly compared to the very high quality anime scene in Suikoden 3 and doesn't have a catchy tune like Suikoden 1. The character animation is a very significant improvement to the herky jerky odd running in Suikoden 3 though. Characters move very naturally and have decent detail. Unfortunately the game shares the same washed out graphical look as suikoden 3, so don't expect too many vibrant colors aside from the MC's flamboyant clothes. In closing this is a solid RPG to buy with a fun, though too easy battle system, and has 108 different characters to collect. Replay value is hurt tremendously by the unskippable cutscenes though, I can't even imagine playing through that horrid intro again.

It is very visually rich and has interesting characters and plots. It is challenging yet not to the point of impossible. It has a moderately open storyline in enough places that you feel you get to actually explore the world in which the game takes place. The fishing mini-game is enjoyable. The only slightly frustrating thing about Suikoden V is how often it pauses for loading. It seems to be more often than any other game I've played. It isn't frustrating enough to keep me from playing the game though.
