Product Information

This unconventional TV series follows a therapist, Paul (Gabriel Byrne), whose patients are steadily becoming more than he can handle. Each have their dark secrets, hidden traumas, and violent battles raging within. Among them are Laura (Melissa George), who has fallen in love with Paul; Alex (Blair Underwood), an Iraq veteran reexamining his life; Sophie (Mia Wasikowska), a suicidal teenager; and Jake and Amy (Josh Charles and Embeth Davidtz), a picture-perfect couple whose relationship is in jeopardy. This first season finds Paul returning to therapy himself, with an old colleague, Gina (Dianne Wiest), helping him come to terms with his mounting professional dilemmas. Like a series of one-act plays, most of the show's dialogue-heavy episodes take place within the confines of Paul's office. During its original broadcast schedule, each patient "was seen" on a different night, five nights a week, offering viewer's a unique experience for following their development. This collection presents the drama's complete first season.

Great, absolutely great title.
I love the delivery, the anticipation, the buildup, the characters. "Paul" is one of the best characters ever created imo. Melissa George will be teaching acting classes and beauty tips in Heaven.

Inexpensive boxed in excellent condition
We wanted to watch the first season of this show which is costly to stream. The boxed set in DVD format was very inexpensive. The set, while used, is in very good condition with no issues at all.

Captivating show from HBO, 1st of 2 great seasons
After years of terrific original programming from HBO, their record began getting spotty. Many seem to think Showtime's overtaken them and I'm not sure I'd argue the point. But this is a fantastic show. It was set in a fashion of an actual psychotherapist, in that the Monday patient was shown Mondays, Tuesday's on Tuesdays, etc. So the disks are set up that way; 5 half hour shows on each, one per patient. Next disk, next session for all. Great job by Gabriel Byrne as the shrink, best I've seen him. He of course is trying the whole time to sort out his own family issues, and has more than his share of problems. The "Friday" sessions are when he goes to see his own therapist, played flawlessly by Dianne Wiest. The ratings were apparently just so-so but the critics raved. There was ... Byrne said the workload of putting together 2½ hours a week was crushing, and it's not hard to imagine that HBO was probably unwilling to try to fix the problem by throwing money at him without the show having Soprano-ish ratings. Also, the show was based on an Israeli show, from which they got the scripts, and that show ran only two seasons. So someone would've had to write new scripts, and there's no guarantee the show would've remained as compelling. In the meantime, this is something you want to see.

GRIPPING TELEVISION SERIES
I watched "In Treatment" through Netflix and was so absorbed in it that I bought the series on eBay and watched it straight through again over the course of a few nights. As a retired clinical psychologist, I thought the unfolding of the clients' stories over the course of the psychotherapy sessions rang true. The psychologist's own therapy with a former supervisor was the best part of the series for me; he intellectualizes with the best of them and is just as hostile and defensive as any of his own clients are during their sessions. Of course many clients would not be so articulate or have such dramatic issues and pasts, and some of the situations depicted would not occur in treatment without the therapist losing his license to practice, but the acting was uniformly great and the plots ...
