Product Information

This set contains two classic horror films from producer Val Lewton. While rarely considered to be one of Val Lewton's best films, ISLE OF THE DEAD does contain the producer's typically effective use of atmosphere. Set during the 1912 war on a Greek Island, the film focuses on six people who are staying on a remote island in order to escape the plague. Boris Karloff gives his typically strong performance as General Pherides, while Ellen Drew plays a Greek girl suspected of being a vampire. Constant winds and creepy sets illustrate each character's general anxiety as disease and suspicions build to a chilling climax.An intriguing change of pace from chillmaster Val Lewton, BEDLAM tells the story of an innocent girl imprisoned in a ghastly 18th-century insane asylum. Nell, an aspiring young actress, rejects the patronage of a London nobleman after learning of the aristocrat's indifference to sadistic practices at the local insane asylum. When word of Nell's accusations reach Master Sims (Boris Karloff), the villainous director of the madhouse, the brutal "doctor" attempts to protect his own reputation by casting doubt on the young woman's sanity.

This review is for both movies; Isle of the Dead and Bedlam. ISLE OF THE DEAD-Boris Karloff plays a general quarantined with others in a house on a plague-invested Greek island during a war. Because they were in contact with a person who suddenly becomes ill and dies, they are fearful that if they leave the island they will spread the plague to others. Then, one by one, various individuals in the group die. This is an interesting and somewhat compelling story of how individuals interact with themselves and deal with the complexities of a very difficult situation. Karloff, as usual, provides a wonderful performance as the General who refuses to give in and accept the inevitable. He also has to fight superstition by some who believe the illness can be attributable to some unnatural ... This review is for both movies; Isle of the Dead and Bedlam. Both films are directed by Mark Robson, who was involved in several fine films, including: "Bridges at Toko-Ri," "Inn of the Sixth Happiness,", and "The Seventh Victim." There is a fine storyline, good acting and direction, and suspense. This movie is a fine example of a good "horror" movie of the 1940's. BEDLAM- Boris Karloff is the Apothecary General of St. Mary's of Bethlehem Asylum in 1761 London. That is to say, he runs the place, and he does it his own way. Anna Lee plays a lady of royalty who visits the asylum, and seeing the deplorable conditions and treatment, is determined to make changes. She becomes such an impediment to Karloff that they conspire to have her committed. Karloff's character is despicable and conniving. It doesn't take long before you wonder how he will be done in. This is one of those movies that you really hate the villian and cheer the underdog. That translates into good acting and and a good story. There is treachery and suspense as well. This film is a bit disturbing, even though it is about how people were treated 200 years ago. It is a good film; not rated, but is not recommended for younger people in the family. Even though anticipated, you probably will enjoy the ending of this film. In summary, both films starring Boris Karloff are pretty good stuff. If you have to choose between each of them, it is a close call, but the edge might go to Isle of the Dead.

would like to have this title, but this one will not play.
This dvd would not play. I tried it in two different dvd/blu ray players. would not recognize disc looks like new.

DONT GO TO THE ISLE OF THE DEAD AND BEDLAM-BORIS AWAITS YOU THERE
