FromSoftware's mech combat series continues with Armored Core V, which features team-oriented multiplayer battles, cooperative play, and a persistent online world. A new operator mode lets one player act as a field general to relay critical information to his or her teammates, including current enemy locations, where they are heading, and other pertinent details. Each team's goal is to conquer as many territories as possible to gain complete control of the region. Also included is an offline story mode that has you pitting your Armored Core against a series of computer-controlled opponents. As with previous games in the series, players will be able to customize their mechs with an assortment of individual parts and upgrades.

If you like Armored Core for what it always was, stick with AC4A.
I'm an Armored Core diehard, and when I heard that AC5 would have a Chromehounds-style MMO multiplayer mode, I couldn't wait to play it. Unfortunately, there's something very important missing from this game. A few things, actually. What's wrong with the game? In all the other games in the series, there was a definite story, and in the most recent games, there were different storylines and missions to choose from. The different companies had a definite feel to them, between the parts they make and the motives they have. In AC5, there is no such story. There's a "Corporation" that is your main enemy in the game, and you work for them in the first mission, then inexplicably switch to the "Resistance" for the rest of the game. The voice ... The voice acting is not very good in AC5 either, whereas all the other games had very well-done acting with voices that personified the machines they belonged to. It's also very hard to figure out who is who, unlike the previous games where you had an operator to talk to you, and in the end of AC4A you would even face her down if you made the wrong ethical choices. The missions are ridiculously easy, and so long as you have the right equipment(tank chassis, cannons, rockets), enemy AC's take seven seconds to kill. Even the big boss at the end is a wimp and can go down in the same amount of time. Take that AC of yours online though, and you'll likely be torn apart even if you're a veteran. The previous games had bosses and enemies that were nigh impossible to kill at times, forcing you to pore over your different weaponry and configurations, which never happened to me during the campaign. Boosters are basically gone in AC5. If you have tank legs and are on water, you can't boost up. You have to find a slope to get out of the water, or quick boost on an edge until you finally get onto land. There is a high boost, but you can only activate it if you're standing on the ground. Can't turn it on mid-air, can't turn it on if you're on water, and it's nowhere near as good as an overboost from previous games. Unlike previous games where the core unit would open up in different ways to deploy an overboost, your high boost comes from your regular boosters and an occasional leg auxiliary booster, which is boring. You can't boost upwards, only jump and then float down. That removes an entire dimension of gameplay that made previous games so awesome. Back weapons and weapon-arms are gone, period. All you can put on your shoulder is a backup arm weapon, not a heavy weapon like a cannon, and you can't switch them if you have a heavy weapon in your hand already. Aside from small shoulder interior weapons and sentry turrets, missiles are also gone. No vertical missiles on your back, no ridiculous heavy missiles, no auxiliary shoulder missiles, no scatter missiles, nothing. You can still equip a countermeasure in the off chance that your opponent has the small shoulder missiles, but that's worthless. The Arena is gone, replaced with random face-offs during side missions. Graphics are good in-game, but intro sequences showing opponent AC's are not fully rendered and look like PS2 graphics. Overall this is a very disappointing game that would have been easy to make awesome. If they just superimposed the story and MMO elements on AC4A, I would have forgiven the voice acting and boring, 10-mission story. The problem is they took away just about everything that made an Armored Core game what it is.

As an old school AC fan this wasn't what I was expecting.. The new game engine plays closer to " front mission" BUT that's not a bad thing. This makes it easier for we players to get the hang of the game. I miss some of the controls. BUT once again the easy shift from weapon to weapon was smooth. I love the. HUD displays an the targeting system. The mech customization is still there an of course the. Graphics are just as BAD-A as always. SO over be ready for change! But get your but in great cause your in for another great ride with this game. OH YEAH.. Your going to LOVE the online co-op modes.
