  • Invisible sharpness and clarity

This lens is where the lowest price meets the highest image quality. I have had two of them, the first one was excellent like the second, but I sold it for the new 50 mm STM. But I missed the extra 10 mm, and now I use the 40 more than ever. It's a serious performer, you can just read the test reports. It may not look beautiful on a dslr in the beginning, but you'll get used to it, and love the results. For my part, it sits on a full format camera, and it is as good for video as for stills. With some 10x magnifying filter glass, it can be used as a macro lens. I have had results that I have sold. Go on, this is a no brainer.

  • Tiny, light & sharp - but not if your looking at the best anyway...

A surprisingly good little lens for the price. for the price that is - I bought a 50L not too long after getting this one and am contemplating selling the 40mm already. Moral = if your saving for something don't buy toys. It's a good lens though, sharp and quite contrasty, AF is slow if your used to higher end lenses, but it's no slower than most non-L lenses (actually might be about the same as the 50L...) So while it's nice and small and does make the camera less bulky I'm not sure i'll use it all that much - if you want a compact camera... buy a compact camera. Might just be used for family events and going for walks etc - I do like the 40mm field of view on a full frame camera. However if your looking for a portrait lens to use instead of ...

  • The best value prime to go with any kit, but it!

This lens is becoming one of my all time favourites and I have a few L lenses. It is sharp, light weight and reasonably quick with AF. I use both full frame and crop cameras, I prefer it on the crop for portraits and on full frame for walk about. There is some heavy vignetting at F2.8 on full frame, easily dealt with in Lighroom 4 or allowing it to be part of the photograph. The three main advantages of this lens are: 1 The optical quality is excellent. 2: It is so small and light you can take almost anywhere without the bulk of large lenses, and 3: It is an absolute bargain at the moment. Canon has announced the new ef35 F2 IS lens, I think that lens might be the ultimate in this range and I will probably buy it, however it will be bulkier and cost several times as much as the ef40 2.8

  • Good lens, well worth the money.

I bought the Canon EF 40mm F/2.8 lens mostly because I would then have a reason to switch lenses - because when you get your first DSLR that's literally the coolest thing on the planet, for a few days at least. Now that the shine is off the apple I can say that I am not disappointed. Compared to the Canon EF 18-55mm Kit lens that came with my camera the 40mm is sharper and with the larger aperture can give me some very nice pics. The 40mm lens equates to a 64mm lens on the 700d which is quite tight but not impossible to use indoors. I have got a few good shots of my other half and finally got the tack sharp eyes that I couldn't seem to get with the softer kit lens.

  • Don't eat it, take pictures!

Extremely disappointed with this 'pancake' lens. On unpacking it looked good, extremely small, flat, pancake-like, but I squirted lemon juice over it and sprinkled it with sugar and tried it, but it tasted vile and I got bits caught in my teeth. Don't buy this lens unless you want to put it on your camera and take superbly sharp distortion-free pictures while carrying a fraction of the weight you might otherwise need to tote. As a walkabout lens it is unbeatable and for the price it's a bargain.
