"A Psychic Crisis"
This book is a look at the population of Black River Falls and the surrounding counties during a 20 year period (1890-1910). The demeanor of these people (and probably common of many rural communities) and the circumstances that may have precipitated them are shown in excerpts from local newspapers. Interesting, especially for me who grew up in this portion of Wisconsin and a thought provoking essay on those difficult times. Not the usual look at history.This book is a look at the population of Black River Falls and the surrounding counties during a 20 year period (1890-1910). I saw this book in a bookstore in Austin, Tx in the late 70's. I was mesmerized by it. I bought it and then lost it or someone stole it from me. I can't remember. When I saw it listed on ebay I thought it's new, at a good price, so I bought it. Once, again I was mesmerized by it. I don't know if it's the pictures or the stories. I was born and raised in San Antonio, Tx. My city has a lot of history as strange and weird as this book contains, but Wisconsin Death Trip just fuels my imagination. I have sat and read the stories and seen the pictures dozens of times. My family laughs at me. I have heard that Michael Lesy was doing research on something else and came across the pictures and stories. I guess that's the reason. He was looking for something else and found WDT. Wisconsin Death Trip -- and What a Trip It Is!
I first saw this book in the mid-1970's. The images from the book burned onto my memory and I've been looking for another copy all these years. The focus is on the lives -- often fragile and painful lives -- of ordinary Americans in out-of-the-way places, using multi-media documentation. Today, we take the juxtaposition of photos, historical documents, newspaper clippings and commentary for granted. When this was first published, this approach to history was remarkable, and the entire volume is still riveting.I first saw this book in the mid-1970's. The images from the book burned onto my memory and I've been looking for another copy all these years. The focus is on the lives -- often fragile and painful lives -- of ordinary Americans in out-of-the-way places, using multi-media documentation. Today, we take the juxtaposition of photos, historical documents, newspaper clippings and commentary for granted. When this was first published, this approach to history was remarkable, and the entire volume is still riveting.

Not Your Typical History Book
