  • THE jazz milestone-fully restored with revelations.

Have always loved listening to this concert, and now Legacy recordings has finally restored every note and pretty much everything inbetween to give us the most comprehensive documentation of the night that jazz became legit-Benny Goodman's landmark 1938 jazz concert at Carnegie Hall. With two songs restored ("Sometimes I'm Happy" and "When Dreams Come True"), jazz solos restored to "Honeysuckle Rose" both in their entirety and never heard on record before, banter between Goodman and the audience and the sounds of anticipation on the part of the crowd that night between numbers, this is almost like being there. Only quibble: I wish producer and liner note writer Phil Schapp had given all the story of why this needed to be restored and all the intrigue as to why it was edited when ...

  • Great Album! Recorded 15 years befire I was born!

I was raised on Big Band (Mom) and Country Dad). I have a friend who has a Band that Plays only Big Band and he recommended this collection. The only Ding I would give it is that the Studio could have done a better job of eliminating the hiss and some other background noise. This is a very good live album. I would recommend it to anyone.

  • 1938 Carnegie Hall concert - latest Col. reissue

If you like swing-era music this one is a MUST. Many the finest first chair musicians of Goodman, Count Basie and Ellington were at the peak of their abilities just then. Lionel hampton makes some sounds on the vibraphone that are nothing short of stupifying! Harry James: as good as you'll ever hear. Lester Young, Johnny Hodges, Bobby Hackett, Krupa - the list is unending! Sure, the sound quality is marginal - pops and clicks from old masters deterioration - and monophonic. Sure, mike placement may have caught too much of Krupa at the cost of balance. Nevertheless, engineers have preserved much of the vibrant ambiance of that night, and devotee's will gladly trade these shortcomings for the resulting conserved musical magic offered here. Listen past the imperfections and marvel ...

  • Recommended with" HISSING,CRACKING,ARKING NOISE CAUTION!!

a fine concert back in 1938 but sadly, recording master forgot to flip the noise toggle switch?. So,if you don't mind the continuous hiss, cracks, and the electric ark-like noise then go for it.it's about time they do a remaster using the latest recording technology available today! maybe steve hoffman will notice my review and do a master-piece of his own on this Benny Goodman's one of his best performances!.All in all, there's a couple cuts on the second disc that are worth listenning to. While I wait for the re-master 24bit CD,think I'm going to search for the 1/8 speed LP version of this fine concert out there and maybe... I'll get lucky.

  • Worth owning but a disappointment

I listened to this CD on my walkman and found it to be a quite average recording. In fairness I would like to hear it on a high quality audio system but my system has not been set up since I recently moved. I have have found my walkman with my grado headphones to give a very good quality sound but this CD seemed lifeless. I own the vinyl recording which is quite sensational despite the limitations of the recording, and those limitations (scratchy sound on the masters)exist on the CD. The vinyl is much more magical and musical and draws the listener into the performance compared to the CD which is lifeless and does not replicated the true sound of either the instruments or the hall. The additional information on the CD does give a true fan a reason to own this reording.
