Yamaha YAS-23 Alto Saxophone
These are good saxophones for most players. I choose something else for my personal instrument though many people I am buying horns for want a Yamaha. My clients don't really understand the difference between a YAS 21 and the Yas 23. The 23 has more advanced technological features. The 21 is easier to fix. I buy mostly 21s because I am exporting them to Guatemala. Easier to fix is an advantage there. Here in the States, the 23 is probably a better buy though the price is generally high. Repair techs here already are familiar with the adjustments on a 23. I argue about the sound of Yamaha saxophones in general. I find the sound generic sounding. I compare it to some of my preferred horns and it really is generic sounding. It makes noise on G#. All of them I've played made that ... These are good saxophones for most players. All of them I've played made that little irritating noise. If you want almost every note to be in tune and have an easy articulating horn, this is a pretty good choice. Get one that is in funky condition and get it fixed. Get a Japanese one. Serial numbers below 300,000.

Used Yamaha YAS 23
My daughter had a Selmer student sax for 3 years and it was only recently that her teacher suggested that she upgrade to the YAS 23. I bought it for her used here on eBay and I got it and had it regulated and cleaned. She has only used it for one class and she could immediately tell the difference in the quality. She LOVES it! I bought her a Vandoren mouthpiece and a Rovner dark ligature to go with it and the result of the combination of it all was just amazing for her. It is so much easier to play now and she has a renewed fervor for playing music. I only gave it 4 stars because she has only used it once. Yamaha yas-23
Read many great reviews on this sax and decided to try it. It was a used sax and some wear but it plays wonderful. Didn't want to spend a lot on a sax being it is for my 11 year old son , just starting to play. We were renting a different sax but because of the large buyout we decided to buy a used one instead. The Yamaha has a nicer sound and plays better. Our son doesn't even want to use his rented sax. Very happy with the quality of the Yamaha sax. Awesome instrument for someone just starting out.
I needed to buy a saxophone for my daughter who is a long-term flute player and was asked to learn a second instrument by her band director. With limited time to plan, I scoured the internet for ideas on what instrument to buy or rent. The consensus among other parents and experts was that a Yahama YAS-23 was a good choice. Clarity of tone, nice finish, easy to maintain, easy to repair or adjust. They were right. The sax is very well constructed and the weight was not too heavy for her to handle. The instrument felt well balanced and the key action was very responsive. After a short learning curve, my daughter was able to produce clear consistent tones, and quickly get up to "speed" during Jazz band practice. There are a lot of brands on the market, and the choice of an instrument ... There are a lot of brands on the market, and the choice of an instrument is sometimes subjective. For instance, when my daughter needed a new flute she "auditioned" (played) 15 different models before purchasing one. But that wasn't possible with the Sax because of the timetable we had to work with. so we took a leap of faith, bought a Yamaha based on prevailing wisdom and couldn't be more pleased with the outcome. Some tips - Get a good sturdy sax stand. I've noticed quite a few instruments on the secondary market with dents on the bell. Using a sax stand when the instrument is idle will make the instrument less "accident" prone. Also - do buy the appropriate cleaning tools and brushes to clean up the moisture inside the instrument before storage to keep the instruments from oxidizing and or rusting. We purchased a used Sax but it was clear the instrument was well cared for. The finish was intact, shiny and no evidence of surface wear or corrosion inside or out. However, I've seen others for sale that look like they've been through a war.
