Expensive filters, and tons of fakes out there which WILL NOT WORK
There are two problems with GE moving to this kind of water filter. First, it has an RFID tag hidden under the label which the fridge uses to determine that it's a genuine GE filter, and to make you replace it after six months. Go too long after and it shuts off the water to the icemaker and water dispenser. These filters cost up to $50 apiece - that's $100 a year for water filters. Ouch. Second - this filter is physically identical to the XWF filter, which is far cheaper and will install in the same place - but it doesn't have the RFID tag under the label and it won't work, the fridge will indicate there is an 'ERR' if you put one on, though it would work perfectly fine for filtering. The big problem is that there seems to be a while industry set up around making fake XWFE filters, ... There are two problems with GE moving to this kind of water filter. Fortunately most of those was able to get my money back through PayPal. IF you buy any XWFE filter online be sure to pay for it with PayPal because if it's fake you can get your money back - and based on my experience, you've got at least a 50% chance of paying a 'bargain' price for a filter that will prove to be useless. The RFID tag is under the outer label of the filter, it's a round thing about the size of a nickel, you have to look for it but it's definitely visible - on a REAL XWFE filter. Best bet of all, order the filter bypass 'plug' from GE which will let the water flow without being filtered at all, and put a water filter under your kitchen sink or wherever the fridge gets its water supply from. Better filters, longer lasting and cheaper. Certainly better than $100 a year for real filters! It's not easy to find the real ones for much less than the regular price... beware. And use PayPal in case you get scammed, as I have numerous times. See the photos - for a comparison of with and without the RFID tag, and a closeup of what it looks like IF it is there. Just because the filter says 'XWFE' does not mean it's real.

It is not as advertised. The designation XWFE is not as advertised. The "E" in this filter indicates it is the new electronic replacement for the previous filter XWF. Yes, it says NO CHIP, but without the chip*, then the E in XWFE is totally inaccurate. * And, there is NO CHIP to begin with. The original OEM filter in this refrigerator, also, does not have a chip, but what it has is a printed electronic circuit on the backside of the label. Without it, when installed, you only get an ERROR message, but no water. THIS WILL NOT WORK IN CURRENT GE REFRIGERATORS using the XWFE designation.It is not as advertised. Great price on a reuly great dilter
This is the first time at changing filter in our new fridge and it was a snap. We have been experiencing a very slow water output, thinking it was just a part of the fridge, but I ordered this filter and amazingly, our water flows great!

not original GE filter does not work on newer fridge.
this filter did not work, an original GE filter has a sensor strip under the label that allow's it to work. this xwfe filter did not have it and would not work on my fridge. i was a waist of money.
