'... the authors has successfully risen to the original challenge of being concise ... the author has managed to write no simply a concise history, but also an interpretive one that can serve as a starting point for stimulating argument.' This is not simply a potted history; it is a nuanced and sophisticated interpretive synthesis that examines the long and idiosyncratic trajectory of this patchwork-empire-turned-rump-state from an unfailingly original-and often unsparingly critical-analytical perspective. Journal of Austrian History Yearbook, "...Steven Beller should be congratulated for fitting not only the nuts and bolts of the development and growth of the hereditary dominons of the Habsburgs from their obscure Swiss origins into the modern state of Austria, but also a good portion of both cultural and social history into just 300 pages....Her book provides a valuable benchmark for future research on changing employment policy regimes." --Jutta A. Helm, Western Illinois University, German Studies Review

Synopsis
For a small, prosperous country in the middle of Europe, modern Austria has a very large and complex history, extending far beyond its current borders. Today's Austrians have a problematic relationship with that history, whether with the multi-national history of the Habsburg Monarchy, or with the time between 1938 and 1945 when Austrians were Germans in Hitler's Third Reich. Steven Beller's gripping and comprehensive account traces the remarkable career of Austria through its many transformations, from German borderland, to dynastic enterprise, imperial house, Central European great power, failed Alpine republic, German province, and then successful Alpine republic, building up a picture of the layers of Austrian identity and heritage and their diverse sources. It is a story full of anomalies and ironies, a case study of the other side of European history, without the easy answers of more clearly national narratives, and hence far more relevant to today's world., For a small, prosperous country in the middle of Europe, modern Austria has a very large and complex history, extending far beyond its current borders. In a gripping narrative supported by beautiful illustrations, Steven Beller traces the remarkable career of Austria from German borderland to successful Alpine republic., Steven Beller traces the remarkable career of Austria from German borderland to successful Alpine republic.

- i***y (712)- Évaluation laissée par l'acheteur.Six derniers moisAchat vérifié2 volumes of Pogo comic strips, new and in perfect condition. Price was good, but shipping cost ($30 for two books) seems like a lot for how long it took to get delivered (23 days from Illinois to Spain). Also, seller communication was not great. First two times I wrote, their response did not address question. Third response explained at length about the private courier service they use and how it should take 1-10 business days to deliver. Maybe they should consider a different courier service.
- o***l (313)- Évaluation laissée par l'acheteur.Dernière annéeAchat vérifiéThe item was described to a Tee. Very good communication. Shipping was just a little slow. The box the set of books comes in was damaged (bent corners) due to packaging. Not a deal breaker because the grand kids will not store in that box; might be if it were to be given as a present. The three books in the box arrived in prefect shape. I WOULD purchase from greatbookprices1 again in the future. ThanksConstruction Site Board Books Set, Hardcover by Rinker, Sherri Duskey; Lichte... - r***_ (108)- Évaluation laissée par l'acheteur.Dernier moisAchat vérifié*Same as the other review* Purchased two box sets from this seller with one being advertised as "like new" but was delivered as if it was actually new. Shipping time was a little slow, takes about 10 days to ship out and it takes a while to get through the system. But the packing was great and I'm still overall happy with my purchase.
