Product Information

Shakespeare's THE TEMPEST is transformed in this landmark science-fiction film. Spacemen travel to a planet ruled by Dr. Edward Morbius (Walter Pidgeon), who has built a kingdom with his daughter and obedient robot Robby. The good doctor is plagued by his mad quest for knowledge through his "brain booster" machine, and by Freudian "monsters from the id" as his daughter discovers other men and learns to kiss.

  • Outstanding 50th Anniversary Edition of Forbidden Planet!

This ultimate presentation for the famous vintage Sci-Fi Movie, "Forbidden Planet", comes in a fine, colorful metal display case. Excellent DVD versions of this movie and the associated "Invisible Boy" movie (with Robbie the Robot) are provided, along with seventeen advertising lobby cards and a 4-inch high model of Robbie the Robot himself. You have to add this to your collection! Who can resist monsters from the Id, Krell super-science, a pompous Walter Pidgeon, a scantily clad Anne Francis, and a young, heroic and for once, serious, Leslie Nielsen. Not to mention the comic relief of Robbie the Robot synthesizing booze for his goofy friend, the cool saucer design of Nielsen's spaceship and the Krell brain machine that can make you the smartest human in space. What a movie! Sure, its a ...

  • The small Robby figure is the best part of this DVD set!

This is worth it just for the Robby figure alone. I collect Robby figures and this is one of my favorites - well-made and painted and very displayable. Just watch out for his radar ring ears, they are extremely fragile and break off if you just look at them! The rest of the set includes a very nice tin display box, a large set of nice repro lobby cards, and the DVDs which I doubt anyone will actually watch now that we have streaming. A cool extra though are the outtakes on the disks, behind the scenes shots, unfinished special effects shots, unused shots and more. If you are a Forbidden Planet fan and can grab this complete boxed set with the Robby figure for under 50 bucks, do it. you won't be sorry.

  • Forbidden Planet - 50th Anniversary Edition DVD in Tin

his is an excellent presentation of The fabled early color 50's Science Fiction Classic film Forbidden Planet. It comes in a great tin, which houses, not only the DVD, butand extra DVD of The Invisible Boy (NOT as great a film as FP, but a companion film of the times; like a matinee double feature to finish the popcorn)...The tin also contaiuns GREAT "Lobby Posters" in 4x5 inch replicas...AND a small "Robby The Robot," imitated by so many Halloween goers inthe 50's! The Robby The Robot is a great rendition, in and of itself...But the real focus of this fun-filled tin is the DVD Forbidden Planet, with a very young Leslie Neilson as romantic lead (no joke here)and a dewey Anne Francis his lady in distress...The Freudian "Monster of the Id" was a brilliant creation, rivaled only by the ...

  • Best sci-fi of the '50s!

This is STILL the best sci-fi flick of the '50s! That gorgeous flyin' saucer C57D glides through space as believably as the Starship Enterprise. However, one look at the crew standing in front of the saucer after disembarking and you can see the ship seems too small for the crew. Great green sky and Earl Holliman's comedic role as the tipsy cook was hilarious! Everyone loves Robby! Even the "monster from the Id" was unforgettable. Anne Francis' body suit did NOT pass for "nude" in the pool. After all, it WAS the '50s. Why Morbius didn't see the connection of the murderous rampage to his own subconscious is a bit puzzling in view of his "boosted I.Q., but altogether this movie is well worth watching over and over again. I'm glad I also have the Criterion Laserdisc version with outtakes ...

  • Get on the Space Couch

Okay, I'm not gonna win any friends here, but really, this movie is kinda lame. Its saving grace is a young Leslie Neilsen (when he still thought he could play straight roles) as well as the overall campiness (completely uninentional). The Freudian aspect of the film (I will not spoil anything for anyone) is interesting in terms of the cultural zeitgeist as well as the cold war overtones. But as a work in and of itself, kinda goofy. The only thing goofier would be THe Invisible Boy, which you get with the 50th Anniversary Boxed set, because they knew no one in their right mind would buy that one on its own. Yes, this is Science Fiction cinematic history and it can be appreciated for that, but I think trying to pull more than that out of this would be stretching things.
