Product Information

Pina Bausch was one of Europe's most celebrated choreographers, fusing the discipline of ballet with the freedom of modern dance and approaching her material in a bold, innovative and emotionally compelling manner. Bausch made the acquaintance of German filmmaker Wim Wenders, and he began making a documentary about her life and work. The focus of Wenders' film shifted dramatically in 2009, when Bausch was diagnosed with cancer and died only a few days later. Wenders considered abandoning the project, but after meeting with the members of her dance company, Tanztheater Wuppertal, Wenders chose instead to create a cinematic interpretation of Bausch's art, preserving several of her pieces and the work of her dancers for the ages. PINA is the result, a performance film that takes several of Bausch's dance pieces into the open and celebrates the beauty and physicality of dance; the film was shot in 3D to give a greater sense of the power and interplay of bodies in motion. PINA received its North American premiere at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival.

Sadly this disc was not to my liking. It is obvious that a lot of effort went into making it; 3D is good; the dancers are doing their best. The dances are mostly choreographed with great care and do manage to convey emotions. Yet, overall, compared to for example Lord of the dance, all of dances here are much simpler, slower, and not being able to tell a story or any deeper meaning or anything (other than a couple of basic emotions like loneliness, love, and so on). The music was also unlikeable, less melodic and rhythmical but more on the experimental side. The theatrical aspect was used poorly, not to enhance the experience but for shock or random value and will probably leave you wondering "now why did they do that? what is the point of this?". Abstract and unsusual
I never heard of Pina Bausch unitl i got this movie.She was the original creator of the Werpertal theater.He creative choreography in theater dancing is arty, and odd.her and Filmmaker Wim Wenders were planning to make this .She died and he got discouraged,but the dancers insisted that the movie be made for her tribute.He decide to shoot i in 3d to create and more intimacy of the film with the audience.Pina's favorite number from Cafe Muller is so strange and haunting,based on her favorite cafe.One of the older dancers demonstrate his tap dancing skill with an old jazz tune and scats in the park ,while a doge barks around him .If the dog did something else it would of been an embarrassment to the dancer. Just about all the dance numbers are very surreal.Shot at the theater,In the country ...
