The Beatles' appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964 and 1965 helped catapult the band to stateside fame and fortune. Their debut performance alone was viewed by 73 million viewers. This collection compiles four full episodes containing 20 songs in total, and including other guests like Soupy Sales, Cab Calloway, and Cilla Black; and even commercial breaks. Shown in their original black and white, these episodes convey the feeling of a bygone era, while placing some of The Beatles' early appearances in a framework that shows how they eventually exploded as one of the most influential rock bands of all time.The four Beatles, with their fluffy mop-head haircuts and little black suits, look like fresh-faced kids as they stride nervously onto the stage in their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show, February 9, 1964. Met by screaming, lovestruck fans--mostly teenage girls dressed in clean-cut sweaters with their hair curled and combed--The Beatles launch into a trio of carefully played songs including "All My Loving," "Till There Was You," and "She Loves You." The next two weeks, on February 16 and February 23, 1964, they reappear on the Ed Sullivan Show, each time to the same unabashed hero worship, performing hits like "Twist and Shout" and "I Want to Hold Your Hand." The last episode on this fascinating collection, September 12, 1965, shows how the band has changed after a year and a half--with longer hair, a loose and rebellious spirit, and a bolder stage presence. This 2-DVD set captures all 4 episodes of the Ed Sullivan show which featured The Beatles. Each show is presented in its entirety - including the original commercials! - for a great look back at a moment that changed the landscape of popular music forever. For those who saw them firsthand, these shows bring great memories to life. For those who were too young to remember, they give a chance to see what all the fuss was about. Besides the historic first appearances by The Beatles, the programs are filled with gems of television entertainment of the day - which may be a double-edged sword, as younger viewers will not likely understand or appreciate some of the comedic and musical performances and topical references (such as Frank Gorshin's brilliant "Rat Pack" impersonations or Acker ... Time Capsule from the 1960's
For all those who don't know it, The Ed Sullivan Show was for two decades a TV/family institution. Any act that played the Sullivan show had gone as high as they could go on American TV. As I saw the original broadcasts starting at 8 pm on Sunday nights back in the day, this DVD is a time machine. You see the complete unedited shows, including commericials for Aspirin (which works for depression among its claims!), Bakery goods, and Instant Tea. Think Nick at Night TV Land. Bless my parents for breaking the 8:30 pm bedtime rule on these occasions. See the Beatles in their US Live Television debut: their first live show (most acts would have lip sync'd, not the fearless Beatles), their 2nd appearance in Miami Beach, Florida (John has to cope with a microphone that won't stay in place), ... (The Beatles did send afterwards Videos when they stopped touring which were shown on the Ed Sullivan Show.) In context, no one had ever Headlined the Ed Sullivan show for 3 weeks running or generated the multi million viewers rating, 73 million for the first show alone when US population was smaller, a record for many years. Brian Epstein had made an agreement as a loss leader, only $12,000 usd for three shows, but the exposure sent the Beatles to the top of the US charts and became Cultural Icons in the US overnight. This appearances forced Capitol Records execs off their backsides. Yes, Capitol owned by EMI (parent company to Parlophone the Beatles label)was stonewalling the Beatles record sales to promote the Beach Boys. Yes, Corporate Rock existed then, too, with the same pitiful lack of imagination (idiots). Hear the Beatle's early set list live(or recorded live)screams. The sound balances are quite differnet from their LPs (the cleaning crew wiped off all the marks on the TV equipment after the dress rehearsal). It's great to see the act before Beatlemania had taken its ultimate toll. Twenty songs that would become standards, Seven of them Number One hits on both sides of the Atlantic and around the world for that matter. For most younger Beatle fans, they may not like the smaller amount of Beatle material spread over 2 DVDs; hey, we didn't cares very much for "Hollywood's Mitzy Gaynor" (no matter how hot she looked), we wanted more Beatles. However, any baby boomer who watched ED will be pleasantly surprised as to see Alan & Rossi, Frank Gorshin (who would portray the Riddler on the TV Batman), Cab Calloway (Blues Brothers Movie), well as Soupy Sales doing the Mouse. A different type of British Invasion is represented, Cilla Black (former cloakroom attendant at the Cavern Club, from Liverpool-Beatles who backed up for her first audition with Brian Epstein, arranged by John Lennon-Brian Epstein's only female act) and Morecambe & Wise (who had the Bealtes on their Comedy show, they sang Moolight Bay together, check out the Beatles Anthology 1 CD) and the semi-"original cast" of Oliver with Georgia Brown and a young Davy Jones. The Same Davy Jones of the Monkees fame. The quality of the sound and transfer of the Black and White is very good, and remember these are 40 plus year performances. (Ed and CBS weren't into Color at this time, but, hey our set was in Black and White, so we didn't know any better all those ago.

The group appeared a total of 3 times in February 1964, drawing in large record ratings numbers for this show, with the first one bringing in an estimated 73 million viewers alone! More than a year and a half later in September 1965, the boys returned one last time performing several songs from their current tour, including the official U.S. debut performances ... Look no further; here are top quality audio, as well as video of the Beatles during their Feb '64 concurring of America! There's also the show from Sept '65, which features Paul doing his famous performance of Yesterday. This was only two weeks after their famous cross-town concert at Shea Stadium, and the lads were still psyched! You don;t just get the excerpts of the Beatles' performance, you get the entire show, unedited, with original commercials, so you get to see the Beatles in the context of their time up against their contemporaries. The quality was great, and it took me back to 1964 when my childhood friend and I sat in front of my black & white TV jumping and screaming when The Beatles came onto the stage. I immediately fell in love with John and he remained my favorite still to this day. My friend, chose Paul. I also enjoyed the greatest impressionist that ever lived "Frank Gorshin" (who I got a chance to meet in person a few years ago - a great guy!) and Mitzi Gaynor's electrifying performance. I hadn't realized until now what an entertainer Mitzi had been because my focus was on The Beatles at the time. Also EBAY - "The" Beatles in The Beatles is spelled with a capital "T"! Buy it!
