Crime ridden, gang infested Metro City has elected a new mayor. But this mayor is not like the others that have come before. He is Mike Haggar, a former professional wrestler and street fighter. The gangs have been unable to bribe him to let them have their way in the city, so the Mad Gear gang, the most powerful of them all, has kidnapped his daughter Jessica. Now, Mike Haggar is out for revenge. He and his friend Cody (a fifth degree black belt in Karate) must fight their way through five sections of the city to rescue Jessica and rid Metro City of its gang influence. Final Fight for the Super NES is a one-player port of the 1989 Capcom coin-op game. While the arcade original has three playable characters, the Super NES version has only two, dropping Guy and keeping Cody and Mike Haggar. As either of these two fighters you must work your way through the city, using punches, kicks, jumping kicks and throws to cut a swath through the gang members in your way. In desperate situations you can employ a special attack that hits everyone around you, but at the cost of a small percentage of your health. You can uncover a variety of useful items by beating down thugs or destroying phone booths, billboards and barrels. Usable items include pizza, grapes, apples and other food that can be eaten for health, jewelry and cash that can be picked up for points, and weapons (such as knives, pipes and swords) that can be used on thugs.

THE ORIGINAL CONSOLE VERSION!!!
When I first saw this game running on a Super Famicom (SFC) in 1990 - I couldn't believe how good it looked. I had been playing Final Fight in the arcade for the past year and loved the game. When I played the SFC version I though it was exactly the same as the arcade version. Playing the game these days, I can see that the game is not as good as the arcade version, 2 characters rather than 3 (Guy is missing), no 2-player option, missing industrial level, less enemies on screen at once, a few sequences missing (e.g. Character walking down stairs between levels etc). But the game does have the same 'feel' as the arcade version - the characters - Haggar and Cody - both have all their special moves and the game is generally true to the arcade version. If you're new to the Final Fight series then I would recommend you buying the Capcom Classics Collection (XBox/PS2), which contains an arcade perfect version of the game. The Gameboy Advance version of the game is also very good. You have to remember that back in 1990 - most console versions of arcade games where not arcade perfect like they are today. So comparisons of this game with today’s versions are unfair. Therefore to conclude, the SNES version of the game is best recommended for the gamer who originally played it back when it came out - who will appreciate the good effort made by Capcom to bring the arcade version to the home console. But if you appreciate old games, and don't expect an arcade perfect version - then you may also enjoy playing this game! DM

The "side-scrolling beat-'em-up" is all but dead in this day and age, but back in late eighties/early nineties, Final Fight provided a desperately needed update to the formula pioneered by games like Double Dragon, and POW. Super responsive controls, large clear and fast moving graphics, and rich full spectrum sound all combined to make Final Fight one of the best games of its time. The Super Nintendo version, while not exactly arcade perfect, duplicated the arcade experience in nearly every important respect. The graphics were practically identical. The sound was better in my opinion (if only because most cabinets I played it on were only set up for monorual), and the controls were spot-on perfect. There were a couple of ... There were a couple of stages missing from the arcade experience, and instead of the characters walking from one area to the next, there was an odd fade out/fade in sequence. The two-player co-op was also removed. Those differences were very trivial to me, but the one flaw that stood out like a crack in a priceless diamond was the missing playable character Guy. The arcade version had three characters - Guy, Cody, and Hagar progressing from weak but quick to slow but strong, with Cody being the middle ground. This range of choices seemed perfectly suited to any play style. For whatever reason the SNES version omitted the ninja-esque Guy (who happened to be my favorite) and left players with just Cody and Hagar as selectable characters. Final Fight was the first game I ever bought for the SNES, partially because of my love of the arcade original, and partly because it showcased the power of the SNES so well. Since selling my SNES (something I've regretted ever since) I've gone way past rebuilding my original meager collection. Over the years I've also collected several other versions of Final Fight - the nearly arcade perfect Sega CD and GBA versions, and the oddball Final Fight Guy, but I never replaced my original copy of Final Fight for the SNES. Until now that is:)

The Final Fight Series is the Best Brawler Games Ever!
Final Fight, as far as brawlers go, can only be compared to others in the trilogy. Despite what you may be thinking, Final Fight is not the worst of these. It ranks, just behind Final Fight 3. Each of the games is at least very good. The characters are bigger. The first boss is very easy, but then you'll have to fight a gliding sword slasher, a gun wielding dirty cop, a bull rushing fighter who causes heavy damage with each attack, and Mad Gears, who uses a quick firing gun with knife like bullets. On the street, you'll have to deal with 2 fast punchers, 2 heavy hitters, 2 agile kickers, 2 military knife wielders, 3 or 4 fat pot belly rushers, and 2 "Andre the Giant" looking fighters. Cody flips as he jumps and has a slow kick, a super fast kick, a knee kick, super fast punches, a toss slam, and a combo of knee pounds. Haggar attacks do way more damage and his slams give you more points per attack(the quicker you gain pts the quicker you'll gain extra lives), but he is also much, much slower and less agile(gets hit more). Haggar is nothing like Cody in movement or moves; he has basic jumps, powerful slothful punches, a slothful kick, a slam that he does from the ground, a combo of chest pounds(if you complete the combo, then you'll zap the most energy), and an aerial pile driver slam that does the most damage of any one single attack. Each has a spinning move that gets them out of trouble, but this move drains a tiny bit of your life, which can add up rather quickly. The punches/pounds and slams can be combined into a combo attack. Slams can also be used to momentarily eliminate an enemy if they are within range. Adv/Disadv to choosing each: You'll find it harder to fight with Haggar as your life gets low, while Cody excells; this is because Haggar is slower and less agile. Haggar seems to fight the bosses better, because he can do more damage. I like fighting with Haggar the best. Comparison: FF1 has the best graphics of the 3, the best combination of weapons and weapon use(the others have more weapons, but FF2 has the worst weapons of all and FF3 weapons are better when used with certain fighters), the hardest bosses(although not many), the hardest overall game of the 3, it doesn't allow 2 player action(not needed for a console brawling game), and it has a hidden menu that is in some ways hard to understand. FF2 has the hardest street warriors, the easiest bosses, the worst fighters to choose from of the 3 games, allow you to gain more points during the entire course of the game, and it does have basic 2 player support. FF3 has most of the regular moves of the others, basic super moves and ultimate super moves that the others don't have, both computer simulated 2 players and basic, the best selection of fighters(although FF1 could have done better in this area with another good character), and the extra lives distribution make the least sense of any of the 3 games. I rank them in this order: FF3, FF1, FF2.

This game is a CLASSIC! One of the great "beat 'em up" games for the Super Nintendo, this game features tight controls, great music, an interesting storyline, and a vast array of moves and attacks that can be executed by the two playable characters. Although a very fun game, with great tilt value, I would recommend picking up either Final Fight 2 or Final Fight 3 for the console, as both games are improvements over the original. A great game however, and a real bargain; Pick one up today!This game is a CLASSIC! Sure it's a fun game that doesn't mimic every aspect of the arcade but still fun to travel down lane.
