CHULAHOMA is a collection of songs that were originally written by the lat Junior Kimbrough reworked and recorded, the Keys capture the very essence of Juniors styles better than any other musician today. Black Keys - Chulahoma
A tribute to the late Junior Kimbrough of Hudsonville, Mississippi, "Chulahoma" is a 6-track, 28 minute collection of songs that were originally written by the late Mississippi Delta shaman. Reworked and recorded by the Black Keys in their own Akron, OH studio, working from the same modal electric blues that Kimbrough applied for decades -- with the common link between Auerbach and Kimbrough -- a desperate wail coupled with subtly sophisticated guitar playing. But the songs sound completely different from the originals, sometimes distorting lyrical structure but mostly throwing a hazy, almost psychedelic trip onto what were once melodically down tuned blues arrangements. Chulahoma is more a blues record than a blues rock one, with Auerbach crooning and handling his guitar with ... What's alarming, though, is when Auerbach's voice transforms from his usual raucous timbre to a deeply Southern-infused bass. On "Meet Me In The City" it's almost impossible to tell him apart from someone who's been performing this sort of music for years. It's not Carney's fault, though, that his drum playing ultimately takes a backseat to the guitar and vocals; his usual wild style would be inappropriate here, but the album misses it just a tad. Modern bluesmen honoring blues great Junior Kimbrough
One night I heard "My Mind is Ramblin'" on the radio-- it was blues night, and the DJ actually played both the original Junior Kimbrough version and then The Black Keys' version and stated after both played that he was unsure which version he liked best. I can decisively say I preferred The Black Keys' version, and that is what led me to purchase the album, the rest of which I quite enjoy. I can play the album over and over again and totally dig it each time; I prefer listening to the album at high volume cranked out on my stereo while I get ready for work. I love the loud wall of sound that The Black Keys produce, and they certainly don't disappoint on their splendid remake of old blues great Junior Kimbrough's album Chulohama. They give a modern ... Blues at thier best
The Black Keys nailed this one! Every song on this recording is a blues driven classic enhanced with The Black Keys distinct sound. In my opinion, one of the best recordings ever done by The Black Keys.

great album, great guitar player, very cool! the black keys playing junior kimbrough musics. it's very retro and the distortion on the guitar is fantastic.
