Conjuring keys and hats out of thin air, Guido (Roberto Benigni), a clever Jewish-Italian waiter, successfully courts Dora (Nicoletta Braschi), a beautiful local woman, in Fascist pre-WWII Italy. His life, however, is turned upside down a few years later when he, Dora, and their young son, Giosué (Giorgio Cantarini), are sent to a Nazi concentration camp. Refusing to give up hope, Guido tries to protect his son's innocence by pretending that their imprisonment is just an elaborate game, with the grand prize being a tank. For years the box-office champ in Italy and the country's most beloved slapstick comic, the Chaplinesque Benigni took a huge risk with LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL. Many people worried that the film would be as offensive as plopping a cartoon character in Auschwitz. (A similar work--THE DAY THE CLOWN CRIED, a Jerry Lewis film about a comedian in a concentration camp--turned out to be a disaster two decades earlier.) Although LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL did provoke some controversy, many people found the film to be a poignant, tragicomic story that profoundly reaffirmed the humanity of concentration camp victims. The film became the highest grossing foreign language film in the U.S. and established Benigni as an international star.

A brilliant, moving film which combines love, family, and history. A+!
This movie starts off seeming a bit slapstick, but the characters are still compelling. After about 15-20 minutes, you begin to understand the circumstances of the era, and small visual cues hint towards the historical significance of the film. The characters will reel you in and you will feel immediately connected. The young boy is precious! The film evokes deep and meaningful thought about what happened during World War II and the viewer faces the reality of what it may have been like for the victims. The film is not gory, but it is powerful in how the message is conveyed. It is a beautiful piece, reminding all who are watching of what took place in our world's history, and hopefully serves as a reminder to appreciate live while you are lucky enough to still have it. We really wanted a digital copy! We found one and the codes worked.
We have been looking to add this to our digital collection. We bought this unopened, but the codes were not guaranteed to work. Well they did for us. The digital is in Italian, but we love this movie. So happy and at a reasonable price.

Case came damaged
The case came with a puncture in the front plastic that went all the way through to the cover art paper, so there’s a moderately sized hole in the item. Its display use and place in my collection is essentially ruined.
