Reviews
"The strength of the book lies clearly in the widespread experience of the two authors. They hae been able to include common and rarer neurological syndromes into an easily digestible and coherent clinical classification . . . The depth of coverage of medical and radiation neuro-oncology, the excellent core reference list, and numerous useful illustrations and algorithms make this a "must have" book.", This is the first neuro-oncology text book that is problem oriented, and as such is most timely . . . this book is recommended for the library of any oncology and neurology department., . . . an excellent overview of the main treatment options for brain tumours based on a thorough review of the literature . . . There are plenty of gems in this book to inform even the most experienced neurologists . . . The strength of this book lies in the ability of the authors to condense many years of combined experience into a small number of succinct chapters and to clarify areas of controversy within the boundaries of the literature . . . I would not hesitate to recommend it., It provides an excellent summary of the treatment options for primary and secondary tumours . . . This is an interesting, well written book that is well referenced throughout., Hildebrand and Brada present the most important aspects of their clinical discipline to their readers, and I believe succeed very well in so doing. Personally, I enjoyed reading this text, and learned from the very personal and practical approach offered by two prominent European neuro-oncologists.

Synopsis
Most neurological lesions in cancer patients are progressive, have a profound influence on the quality of life and are life threatening. Management of the situation requires rapid identification of the nature and location of the problem as the treatment outcome depends as much on the speed of diagnosis as on the subsequent therapy. While modern neuroimages provides invaluable clues to the diagnosis, they need to be interpreted in the light of clinical data. The clinical examination remains the cornerstone of the differential diagnosis of neurological lesions affecting the cancer patient. Neurological disorders are a consequence not only of primary tumours of the central and peripheral nervous system but also of systemic malignancy. One in five patients with disseminated malignancy develop neurological complications other than neurogenic pain. The majority of neurological problems are a direct consequence of metastatic disease or the result of metabolic disorders; however, some disorders are due to anti-neoplastic treatments or the administration of drugs. The incidence of CNS infections and vascular lesions is also increased in malignant disease, and a small proportion of neurological disorders are paraneoplastic, resulting from a remote effect of cancer on the nervous system. This book, written by a neurologist and an oncologist, aims to help the clinician to identify and locate the underlying neurological lesion in a cancer patient, and to make a quick therapeutic decision. Diagnostic and therapeutic algorithms are included with an emphasis on the more common and potentially treatable conditions. It should be read by neuro-oncologists, medical oncologists, radiation therapists, neurosurgeons and all those involved in the management of cancer patients., Most neurological lesions in cancer patients are progressive, have a profound influence on the quality of life and can be fatal. These disorders are very common, approximately one in five patients with generalized cancer will develop a major neurological problem. This book takes as its starting point, clinical situations suggesting a neurological lesion in cancer patients. The aim of the book is to help the clinician to identify and locate the underlying lesion and to make a quick therapeutic decision. Diagnostic and therapeutic algorithms are included with an emphasis on the more common and potentially treatable conditions.
